Brink
Artist : Dave Stringer
Dave Stringer: Brink Reviewed By Derk Richardson in Yoga Journal Kirtan singer Dave Stringer makes his debut as a folk-rock singer songwriter with 11 songs that unite his spiritual and secular interests in a surprisingly seamless blend. Following a path parallel to that of Jai Uttal, Stringer moves back and forth between original pop songs performed in English and traditional Sanskrit chants, thus gently obliterating any doubt about these two forms belonging on the same record. Continuity is provided by ingenious arrangements that incorporate a fluid mix of Eastern and Western acoustic and electric instruments – a combination of various guitars (including dobro and Hawaiian steel), dulcimer, piano, accordian, harmonium, tabla, sarangi, cello, violin, flute, trumpet, drums and a plethora of ethnic percussion and backing vocals. An accomplished record producer as well (Axiom of Choice, Suzanne Teng), Stringer has organized the diverse sounds into a sequence of elegant aural rainbows, retaining an Eastern cultural resonance even when fleshing out unabashedly pop melodies.

The music that flowed was an amalgum of sounds- Violin and Cello with Bansuri Flute- Sarod and Esraj with Piano and Drums- Electric Guitar and Bass with Tabla – Gryphon Guitar with Trumpet and African Percussion… But throughout was the thread of Krishna Das’ deep emotive voice and the voices of the choir and the hypnotic mantric names spun from the living spirit in the room.

Dakini Lounge - Prem Joshua Remixed
Artist : Prem Joshua Remixed (Various)
ere, an eclectic collection of cutting edge mixologists including Karsh Kale, Sean Dinsmore (The Dum Dum Project), Joi and Dharma Dogz (of Waterbone) shed new light on Joshua’s signature sound, translating his East-West alchemies into stunning dub, chill and dance floor masterworks. Prem Joshua has come a long way from the 18-year-old German rocker, mind blown by a Ravi Shankar performance, answering a mysterious call from a faraway place. While spending the better part of 20 years in India (where he has sold well over 50,000 records), Joshua has developed a unique musical style employing sitar, Indian flutes, saxophone, electronica and tarana-style singing that artfully—and skillfully—bridges the gap between traditional Eastern sounds and Western jazz forms, prompting the Times of India to dub him “the new guru of East-West fusion music.”

Mudra
Artist : Prem Joshua
After playing live at a trance event in India, multi-instrumentalist Prem Joshua and the Dutch keyboardist Maneesh de Moor knew that they were on to a new sound--one they had to rereate in the recording studio. The result is Mudra, born from the silence of the Tuscan hills and the noise of downtown Amsterdam. On this excellent worldbeat recording, "trancey" analogue keyboard sounds fuse with sitar and ethnic flutes for a unique synthesis of ancient exotic instruments and contemporary Western grooves. Mudra promises a danceable, joyous and upbeat musical journey.

Yoga Mela: An Eastern Vibrational Experience
Artist : White Swan Records (Various)
Exotic sonic textures and chilled rhythms create a beatific Eastern backdrop for your power yoga session—or the festivities that follow. Crafted to flow with an upbeat mood, Yoga Mela lends a sensual vibe to any casual setting. This collection matches some of the most popular names in the “yoga beat” genre--including Prem Joshua, Ikarus and Karmix—with rising stars such as Suvarna, Toires and Aziza A. Master mixologist dj Cheb i Sabbah lends his magic hand to previously unreleased remixes by Deva Premal and Manish Vyas. Together, these groove savvy artists dish up an Oriental concoction of the freshest flavor. Evoking the worshipful, celebratory aura of Asian melas--or festivals--Yoga Mela invites you to immerse yourself in a relaxed aural experience that will move you at any volume.

Love Is Space
Artist : Deva Premal
Glowing with an inspiring, heart-centered passion, Love Is Space sets a new musical standard for mantra singing and is the perfect instrument for creating a calm, impenetrable oasis on the massage table, meditation cushion or yoga mat. Deva Premal’s gorgeous voice floats above graceful arrangements on guitar, piano, harmonium, flute and light percussion, bringing these ancient mantras to life. Love Is Space, Deva Premal's second solo album, contains six sacred mantras from India, including "Gatè Gatè", the heart sutra of Buddha, and "Om Mane Padme Hum", the ancient Tibetan invocation. Also included is the exquisitely performed West African chant, "Idè Werê Werê". This beautiful recording continues in the footsteps of Deva Premal's classic debut CD, The Essence.

Dance Of Shakti
Artist : Prem Joshua
Joshua comments on Dance Of Shakti: 'As the title suggests--it's again a more rhythmical, energetic album, and I had maximum fun doing this one. 'There are many soulful melodies on Indian instruments like bamboo flute, sitar, dilruba and santoor, flying over strong ethnic and modern grooves, hip hop, drum 'n' bass and trancey rhythms and sounds--all interwoven with Manish's 'pumping' tablas. But there is one more thing. I got totally into singing! I got into my own very contemporary version of Indian 'Tarana' singing and also chose some beautiful mantras. 'The main musicians I'm playing with are Manish Vyas, multi-instrumentalist from India; Maneesh de Moor, keyboardist from Amsterdam; and Rishi, drummer, producer and genius from Copenhagen. Of course there are also other musicians who left their juicy statements on the album, like Chintan and Dinesh from Hamsafar and great talents from the Indian and Danish music scene.'

Featuring new music and remixes by Transglobal Underground (Tarika), Peter Kruder (Bebel Gilberto), Bill Laswell (Gigi), Manu Chao, Karsh Kale, Dub Farm (Krishna Das), Ex-Centric Sound System, Temple of Sound and more....

Spirit Dwelling
Artist : Geoffrey Armes
Spirit Dwelling, sonic architecture for the heart, mind and soul, is a gallery of deconstructed groove soundscapes that mix world percussion (udus, talking drums, rainsticks and the like), with treated guitars (lots of pitch-transposed parallel 4ths through delays, etc.) that bend lengthy modal melodies around drones and the occasionally very pure acoustic note. A holding place that invites contemplation or even 'no mind' peace, yet at the same time energizes and inspires movement and effort. A sonic space to work both with and with-in. Yoga, a traditional practice of exercise for the body, aims to enable a freedom of spirit and soul from the body's demands. Hence, a music designed to accompany such practice should both inspire the coarse body energy required to complete the poses and so forth, and bring light to the hidden recesses of the spirit, acting as a holding place for a feeling of inner contemplation and peace. Composer Geoffrey Armes, after some twenty-five years working with Modern Dance in New York City, Asia and Europe, combined with practice of the spiritual exercise of the Subud latihan, is uniquely positioned to create such music. With Spirit Dwelling, a beautifully crafted but deeply felt opus, he more than achieves this aim, with a lyrical sonority that sparkles and dances over an inexorable flow of well-wrought, deeply touching music. Put together by the same creativity that forged the acoustic journeys of Elemental Red, the modern dance. Place your mind aside and this music will take your soul into Spirit Dwelling.

Ally Hamilton Live at SMPY Vol. 2

Ally Hamilton leads you through a vigorous 90-minute poweryoga practice. This cd is for experienced beginners and advanced practitioners alike. Be prepared to breathe deeply and sweat profusely as you open your body and your mind. Ally's down-to-earth style proves that spirituality doesn't have to be esoteric to be powerful.

A Drop Of The Ocean
Artist : Sultan Khan & Krishna Das
An interesting collaboration between Sultan Khan, the undisputed master of the sarangi (a bit of a dying instrument in itself due to the difficulty and pain involved in playing it) and Jeffrey Kagel, aka Krishna Das, a leader in updating chant accompaniment, among other things. It would seem at first glance that a master of accompaniment would work well with a sarangi player (itself often an accompanying instrument), but at the same time there's the potential for no lead to be taken whatsoever. During portions of the album, this is exactly what seems to be the case, as Khan can play out a beautiful bit of backing material alongside some electronics, neither of which take the forefront. For the majority of the album though, there is a definite focus. Khan gets the opportunity to take extended journeys on solo sarangi with great mastery displayed throughout. In other sections, the two take turns singing and chanting, often accompanied softly by guitarist (and incidentally composer of Midnight at the Oasis) David Nichtern. The end result of this is a very ambient sort of album, with a lot of exceptional sarangi to be heard.

Planet Yoga - Music for Yoga, Meditation and Peace
Artist : TriLoka - (Various Artists)
This two-disc set is divided according to its usefulness to the listener. Disc one is the choice for the yoga part and is perhaps a slightly active version of peace. The booklet even shows a number of hatha yoga poses to try while singing along to a selection of chants that invoke various divinities by repeating their names over and again. Jai Uttal sings to the young cowherd deity Lord Krishna on his fusion-laced "Gopala" and Bhagavan Das praises Ram with a melodic groove, while Dave Stringer offers a quiet prayer to Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed boy who removes obstacles. Both tracks from Krishna Das honor Lord Shiva, one being a previously unreleased, rhythm-based "prayer" to his fierce Rudra incarnation. Two lesser-known artists also make fine contributions -- Wah! and Diana Rogers, both of whom have sung as part of the Krishna Das Kirtan Posse over the years. So you've got all that energy out and now you are ready to meditate or be passively peaceful? Pop in disc two and chill on out. The aural landscape painted by Drala is a bit on the new age side, but calming nonetheless. Benjy Wertheimer and his esraj (a classical Indian string instrument) lay down two pieces based on the alap (a classical Indian musical statement), though the specific ragas are not named. The disc closes with the legendary "Emperor of Melody," Ali Akbar Khan. A master of the sarod who has been performing since 1936, Khan offers "Morning Meditatio," which originally appeared on his 1990 release Journey.

Afrika Wassa
Artist : Vieux Diop
From Mozambique to Nigeria to Ethiopia, many African pop artists use Western instruments exclusively. They're still embracing African rhythms, but they use western instruments to play them and exclude traditional African instruments like the kora (a string instrument with a harp-like sound), the mbira (one of Africa's various thumb pianos), and the kalimba. Vieux Diop, however, is among the African pop vocalists who favors a combination of African and Western instruments. On 2000's Afrika Wassa, the kora and other traditional African instruments interact with the drums, bass, and guitar. A native of Senegal who has lived in the U.S. since 1984, Diop is no stranger to multiculturalism -- on Afrika Wassa, he sings in Senegalese languages as well as English and French. His style of African pop isn't hyper and ultra-exuberant a la soukous, makossa, and zouk -- nor is it moody, smoky and jazz-influenced like a lot of Ethiopian and Sudanese pop. Rather, Diop goes for a gentle, relaxed, reflective approach and sometimes incorporates elements of American folk. Afrika Wassa isn't for dancing; it's best to sit down and listen to this charming, heartfelt CD.

Dhyana Aman Meditation of No Mind
Artist : Manose
For ages, spiritual seekers have looked East for the key to cutting through material illusion in their search for the divine space we all share, a temple accessed only via the inner travels of the quiet mind. Recorded in Kathmandu, Nepal, Dhyana Aman: Meditation of No Mind evokes the boundless expanse and reverberating stillness of the Himalayas, paving the listener’s path to this elusive, mist-shrouded sanctuary of true realization. Timeless chants beckon from the towering quiet, floating on bamboo dreamscapes and the singing bowls’ eternal ring. Manose’s flute threads through the music like drifting incense vapors, a gentle reminder of a steadily burning ember. Radiant chanting by Tibetan nun Choying Drolma and monk Dorje Lama lend a transcendent, otherworldly feel to a recording that is breathtakingly beautiful in its simplicity. Ideal for relaxation, meditation and bodywork, Dhyana Aman: Meditation of No Mind reveals a new petal in the lotus bloom of Tibetan/Nepali meditation music—a vehicle for introspective journeys imbued with the healing aspects of an age-old tradition. Using only traditional instruments and arrangements, this is a purely acoustic recording. The sounds of these ancient callings create an ideal atmosphere for meditation and bodywork.

Gathering in the Light
Artist : Baird Hersey and Prana with Krishna Das

** EDITOR'S NOTE: "Gathering In The Light" is Yoga Instructor Sarah Ivanhoe's CD of the month **

THE CD

"Gathering In The Light" is a pairing of two musical forces. Kirtan master Krishna Das, and Baird Hersey and his overtone singing choir Prana unite here to make music that’s whole is far greater than the sum of its parts. With the open hearted sound he is so well know for, Krishna Das sings seven of his most beloved chants over arrangements created by Baird, and sung by Prana.

But, Prana is far more than a human harmonium. The other worldly ensemble sound of Prana's drones, textures and rising harmonies are a perfect setting for both Baird's high arcing overtone melodies and Krishna Das' rich baritone.

The two featured voices, sometimes support one another, and sometimes act as a foil for one another. When placed in the frame of the 8 voice choir, they shine like two spirits in pursuit of the same ethereal goal.

Although this is neither purely a Prana CD or Krishna Das CD, It is like nothing else you will hear. "Gathering In The Light" is innovative, heartfelt, and breath taking.

THE STORY

In October of 2004 Krishna Das attended a release party for PRANA's first CD, "The Eternal Embrace". After Prana had sung, Krishna Das said to Baird, "Let's make a record together or something".

Over the next two year the "or something" was Krishna Das inviting Prana to sing at his larger benefit Kirtans in the New York area. As a part of those evenings KD would join Prana to sing Baird's arrangement of his chant "Puja". The combination of the ethereal sound of overtone singing supporting the rich, open hearted voice of Krishna Das was stunning.

In 2006 Baird and KD decided to record "Puja" for Prana's new CD. The resulting 12 minute piece was so striking, they resolved to record an entire CD together. The result is "Gathering in the Light", Krishna Das singing seven of his most beloved chants over arrangements created by Baird and sung by Prana.

On four pieces percussion was added: Jerry Marotta, (Peter Gabriel, Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello) on hand percussion and drums, South Indian Masters Drummers Subash Chandran, playing ghatam (clay pot), Ganesh Kumar playing kanjira (tunable tambourine), and Arjun Alan Bruggeman on Tabla. The only instrument on the CD other than percussion is the human voice.

The singers of PRANA are; Peter Buettner, Amy Fradon, Kirsti Gholson, Julie Last, Bruce Milner, Julian Lines, Leslie Ritter, Joe Veillette

"Gathering In The Light" is dedicated to Pattabhi Jois and Neem Karoli Baba.

All Chants Composed by Krishna Das., arranged and produced by Baird Hersey

These six sensuous compositions offer a path of personal evolution and growth focused on the connection between sexuality and spirituality. They relax the body, open the heart and bring the mind into clear focus. When this integration has taken place, the listener is ready for a new sexual experience in which physical pleasure becomes a delight of the heart and an ecstasy of the spirit. When practiced with a partner, Tantra has for centuries been shown to contribute to a healthy, loving relationship.

The Journey Home
Artist : Gurunam Singh Khalsa
Gurunam Singh's debut album that will flow through you with such warmth and fullness, you will feel deeply comforted by its rich textures, talented instrumentation, and the deep, fluid timber of Gurunam's voice. These chants are sure to quickly become your favorites! The music evokes Americana sensibilities woven together with traditional Indian instruments, creating a warmth of sound that is inviting and entrancing. Producer Hans Christian expertly fused the sounds of harmonium, bass, cello, sarod, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, keyboards, dumbek, tablas, djun djun drum and frame drum. Gurunam has harnessed the musical devotion that has built in his music over the last 15 years. You will hear flavors of Krishna Das and James Taylor in the deep, smooth textures of Gurunam's voice. His compositions were written in the framework of his yogic lifestyle and are ideal to chant along with. Each track has a unique flavor, and yet they seamlessly flow from one to another to create an album that is great for yoga or meditation. This album also makes you want to jump in your car, turn up the volume, and find a long country road to drive peacefully down. On the track Dukh Par Har, you will hear an amazing call and response between Yogi Bhajan and Gurunam. Yogi Bhajan's chant was taken from a lecture he gave to his students and his voice was mixed in with this composition to stunning effect.

Gravity and Grace
Artist : Stuart Balcomb
Yoga Master Peter Sterios writes: "From the beginning of this project, it was clear to me that those involved in putting together my first yoga DVD all shared one vision: to create from a space of inspiration. From the outset, the cinematography, choreography, editing, authoring, and finally with the composing of original music which you will find on this CD, every aspect reflected that commitment made by all the artists. Stuart Balcomb's music is the icing on an already amazing cake that brought all the pieces together seamlessly. This music is perfect for creating the 'acoustic space' for yoga, for massage, for meditation, and for any activity where music and sound can invoke the power to transform." Balcomb writes: "This is a new kind of yoga soundtrack. I took an approach entirely different from what has traditionally been done. After seeing the elegant footage, I knew I needed to 'sculpt' the music to enhance the movements instead of simply writing tunes that would merely function as background music. Peter and I spent two days meticulously spotting the footage to determine different changes in energy levels and movements for almost every frame of film. This is something normally done for a feature-length film, not yoga videos. It then took 5-1/2 weeks of solid composing, recording, and mixing to create three hours of music for the DVD." Produced by Conscious Enlightenment and Transcendent Sound, the Gravity & Grace soundtrack, containing over two-and-a-half hours of music.

Uplifting, rocking, even bluesy, these chants come from the kundalini yoga tradition of Yogi Bhajan. Carrie-Ann Moss Roy (of The Matrix fame) even sings on the track, "I Am."

Live In Concert
Artist : Snatam Kaur
Recorded at concert halls, churches and yoga studios as Snatam Kaur and her ensemble traveled across North America, you?ll hear performances which soar to the heights of these sacred spaces and find a home in the hearts of their audiences. Join in the magical experience of Snatam Kaur Live in Concert.
This album fulfills years of requests for Snatam Kaur to capture the experience of her live performances on CD. There is something mystical that happens at her concerts that is represented in these songs.
The album opens with Azure Salver, a prayer translated in the book Peace Lagoon. This song has been a favorite at her concerts, but has never been recorded before. This song is hilighted by the clarity of Snatam's voice, the poetry of the lyrics, and the expert instrumental accompaniment.
The live version of Snatam's Ong Namo takes the recorded version into the ethers. Sometimes when Snatam is on stage, she goes into a deep meditative space and spontaneously weaves improvisational poetry into the songs. Ong Namo has a beautiful example of this.
On Ong Sohung, Gobinda Hari and Adi Shakti, the dynamic interplay of the entire band is hilighted to perfection with incredible musical conversations between Snatam Kaur, Manish Vyas and GuruGanesha Singh, fantastic solos on guitar, violin, tabla and clarinet, and the lively experience of a slowly building rhythm that is unique to the live kirtan experience.
Shivohum is a track composed by Manish, and you will be singing this track for years to come. A beautiful duet between Snatam and Manish, this track has an an addictive energy and purity of sound that you will want to listen to again and again.

Nectar Of The Name
Artist : Sat Purkh
Sat Purkh's voice draws you in from the first note. Rich, silky and undeniably expansive, you will eagerly accompany her on this eclectic journey through styles, languages and religious traditions on Nectar of the Name. Sat Purkh seamlessly blends Gurmukhi songs with beautiful English poetry. On Nectar of the Name, her debut album, there is a simple and stunning blend of instrumentation on soul-stirring vocals that are not to be missed.
Her Gurumukhi songs blend traditional melodies and instrumentation with Western compositions and rhythms. Beautiful sitar, tar, keyboards, guitar, trumpet, flute, piano, fiddle, tabla, bongos, and frame drum work together to bring her unique musical style to life.
Sat Purkh has found peace with the spiritual tradition of the Sikhs and the music gives her voice a place for it, but you can hear the soulful church influences of her childhood in some of her English vocals, including the opening track Aisa Nam and "The One I Love" - a track from a song by Gina Sal based on a line from Hafiz, the well-known Sufi poet that could as easily be a country Christian soundtrack.
The title track, Nectar of the Name, is an amazing choral experiment in calling out the names of God from all faiths. An almost purely vocal track, the layers of vocals layer upon each other slowly in waves, intimately weaving together, and presenting the interconnectedness of all faiths as they slowly merge into a single, beautiful sound.
The grand finale of the album, Guru Dev, is a high-energy Latin-flavored chant with incredible Spanish flute and trumpet accompanied by a multitude of drums from around the world that will have you exalting in the joy of ecstatic chant.

Savasanas
Artist : Gabriele Morgan
"Savasanas I - IV" is the first entry in a new series of works called "Inner Time Music". Inner Time Music allows the listener to drift into deep inner realms and disconnect from the temporal commandments of our usual physical focus which insists that we keep up with the pace dictated by the clocks, cell phones, computers, radios and other devices which structure our days; instead, it invites us to recharge our beings in the spacious timeless dimensions within in which we each have our source, by creating an environment of magnetic, potent but gentle musical beauty that focuses attention while calming the nervous system.
The concept was born when master yoga teacher Annie Carpenter commissioned Gabriele to create music to accompany the final, deep relaxation section (the yoga posture or "asana" known as "Corpse Pose" or, in Sanskrit, "Savasana") of class on a DVD for participants in a UCLA School of Medicine pilot study designed and taught by Annie (“Yoga For Women With Hyperkyphosis”.)The only guidelines given for the music were that there must be no pulse in the compositions, that they had to be two minutes long, and that several were needed for different sequences.
These original short pieces found their way into the hands of another well known and respected Los Angeles yoga teacher, Vinnie Marino (both Vinnie and Annie teach at Yoga Works in Santa Monica). Vinnie found the pieces totally captivating but too short to allow for a prolonged period of exploration of this most potentially rejuvenating asana, and he suggested they be expanded to 10 minutes each and that 4 of them comprise a CD he could use in his class and in his personal practice. This CD is the result of that suggestion.
Although they do not contain anything marking time, these works are not formless. They each have central themes which are stated and evolve and reprise as each track develops, so they are not purely ambient in that respect. Three of the four tracks employ voice as a component but there are no words. They feature familiar western instruments: acoustic and electric guitar, piano, synthesizer, and Gabriele's emotional, mood-setting vocal textures. They are recommended for any activities where relaxation and letting go are primary goals and are extremely effective in inducing a restorative, reflective space in which to inhabit the moment.

Reiki Whale Song

Sea and Silence
Artist : Deuter
Deuter’s signature healing flute layered with soft piano melodies and Rich Ocean sounds. “The genius of Deuter has been not only to incorporate the sounds of the ocean into the music, but to allow the waves to become music themselves. For Deuter, silence has its own chords and through his CD, Sea & Silence, the stillness of the present moment has never sounded more clear or more harmonious.” – Brian Jackel, San Francisco Sentinel

Devotion
Artist : Annmarie Solo
At the awakening of this disk, a harmonium slowly fades until  Annmarie Solo's voice touches the notes with her lips and we are transported into a space  that is abundant and ethereal. Annmarie is an L.A. artist who sings like her heart would dissipate  if she didn't. She has recorded with many artists those of us in L.A. are blessed to  hear on a regular basis and she has been using music to find her real voice here on earth. On the sampler i received there were three devotional songs that  bleed into one another, "Asatoma Sat Gamaya", "Jai Ma",and "Some Kind of Light". The songs  were recorded with Jeffrey Andrews   and the results are stirring, authentic and pure. Annmarie was  truly inspired when she recorded these compositions and I couldn't be more pleased. Fans of her music will certainly melt  when they get a shot of this stuff. The basic feel is totally devotional and with little or no  accompaniment. Almost like one of Sheila Chandra's earlier albums,  Annmarie just lets her voice do the work with no  percussion. With just a faintly held chord heard accompanying this singing angel's exquisite harmonies, each  composition on this sampler truly hits the mark. I recommend this artist to anyone who enjoys honest, sacred, devotional music that is simple, unpretentious and sublime. Perfect for any yogic environment.

Maha Moha- The Great Delusion
Artist : Wade Imre Morissette
An accomplished musician and yoga teacher, Wade unites his two passions – yoga and music – in a fusion of Eastern influenced musical arrangements with Western sensibilities, creating his own original style of kirtan chant music.

A collaboration with award-winning producer, David Nichtern, the pair bring together an array of instruments from tabla to sitar, as heard on the title track “Guru Ma” which features special guest vocals by Krishna Das. The poignant sounds of the bansuri flute and Wade’s deep and honest vocals on “Inside” take the listener on a soulful journey.

While Wade’s previous releases have explored a sense of longing, this album draws in listeners to a connection of humanness and spirituality. His blend of indie rock/pop music has been called by LA Yoga, “…what it might sound like if James Taylor put out a kirtan album.”

Wade and his twin sister Alanis took to music at an early age, but always in search of a practice that would help him connect to his spirit, Wade discovered yoga and dedicated the next decade of his life to learning and teaching the practice. It wasn’t until one of his many trips to India that Wade began studying chanting and fell in love with kirtan, an ancient musical art form.
