In The Shallows - Soundscore for the Getty Courtyard
Artist : Yuval Ron
Artistic and reserved, In The Shallows is Yuval Ron's 52-minute score for an interpretive dance performance. A most contemplative place awaits In The Shallows… Yuval Ron and cohorts present a sparse-yet-evocative production as exotic and contemporary instrumentation is applied to serious, introspective pieces. Meditative Mount mantra is enshrouded in austere droning layers from which electrical entities seems to emerge; feminine wails soar to higher registers, wavering in the windswept heights. Swishy fluids pour forth as Water music spreads in an expansive pool of assorted soundforms, including spaciously occurring metallic bowl emanations. Even-quieter tinklings happen as Glass falls over a sedate bed of low reeds and faint streams of keyboarding/processing. Minimal rhythmic pattering begins a Stone dance; the light, clattery percussion picks up in tempo, though maintains a low profile throughout. Brooding depths extend far beneath Rêve d'Éternité in an inexorable current; Tsvetanka Varimezova's faraway chants are siren calls, accented with muffled rhythms. Bracingly lovely! For the finale, Weaving unfurls an ominous blend of deep spectral energies, spare occurrences of mood-altering percussion and emotive flutational scene-setting.

Embrace finds this best-selling singer at the height of her art, expressing the ancient wisdom of mantra through a contemporary musical vision. Deva Premal's gorgeous voice, richer and more assured than ever before, floats above a cool, sensual groove provided by some of today's finest world fusion artists. Deva Premal enthralled audiences worldwide with The Essence and Love Is Space. That phenomenal success continues with Embrace. Its relaxed, uplifting feel and elegant sense of space can only heighten the spell already cast by this mantra enchantress. Produced by Miten and Kit Walker (Walela, Kitaro, Pagan Love Orchestra), Embrace features a more fully developed musical dynamic, due in large part to virtuoso performances by such top flight musicians as Jai Uttal (dotar and distinctive vocals), Kit Walker (keyboards, grand piano, Hammond B3), Nepali native Manose (bansuri), Miten (vocals, guitar), Ty Burhoe (a star protégé of Zakir Hussain) and Marquinho Brasil (assorted exotic hand percussion).

Love Is Space
Artist : Deva Premal
Glowing with an inspiring, heart-centered passion, Love Is Space sets a new musical standard for mantra singing and is the perfect instrument for creating a calm, impenetrable oasis on the massage table, meditation cushion or yoga mat. Deva Premal’s gorgeous voice floats above graceful arrangements on guitar, piano, harmonium, flute and light percussion, bringing these ancient mantras to life. Love Is Space, Deva Premal's second solo album, contains six sacred mantras from India, including "Gatè Gatè", the heart sutra of Buddha, and "Om Mane Padme Hum", the ancient Tibetan invocation. Also included is the exquisitely performed West African chant, "Idè Werê Werê". This beautiful recording continues in the footsteps of Deva Premal's classic debut CD, The Essence.

Dakshina
Artist : Deva Premal
Mantras are rapidly becoming the music of choice for people seeking solace in sound, and Deva Premal, dubbed by one reviewer as "the Enya of mantra," is the voice they're turning to. With close to 400,000 CDs sold worldwide and a buzz of interest from ardent fans ranging from yogis, therapists and alternative health practitioners to Cher and His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Deva Premal and her partner Miten have achieved a huge degree of recognition in the blossoming niche world of yoga music. Deva Premal's music is driven by a simple yet elegant vision: "everybody with a voice can sing, and everyone with a breath in their body can experience their divinity...we share with others the healing power of music, and the bliss that it brings." The phenomenon of her groundswell of listeners is living proof that mantras are as relevant today as they were thousands of years ago. Featuring Deva Premal’s transcendent voice layered in a chorus of lush harmonies, Dakshina is a celebration of the divine, perfect for yoga and relaxation.

Dance Of Shakti
Artist : Prem Joshua
Joshua comments on Dance Of Shakti: 'As the title suggests--it's again a more rhythmical, energetic album, and I had maximum fun doing this one. 'There are many soulful melodies on Indian instruments like bamboo flute, sitar, dilruba and santoor, flying over strong ethnic and modern grooves, hip hop, drum 'n' bass and trancey rhythms and sounds--all interwoven with Manish's 'pumping' tablas. But there is one more thing. I got totally into singing! I got into my own very contemporary version of Indian 'Tarana' singing and also chose some beautiful mantras. 'The main musicians I'm playing with are Manish Vyas, multi-instrumentalist from India; Maneesh de Moor, keyboardist from Amsterdam; and Rishi, drummer, producer and genius from Copenhagen. Of course there are also other musicians who left their juicy statements on the album, like Chintan and Dinesh from Hamsafar and great talents from the Indian and Danish music scene.'

Satsang - A Meditation in Song and Silence

A bonus studio recording of "All is Welcome Here" is also included. SATSANG is a simple yet precious recording celebrating the sacred space of silence and song. Joining Deva Premal (keyboards) and Miten (guitar), are their special musical friends, Kit Walker, Maneesh de Moor, Praful, and others.

Effortlessly, Prem Joshua blends the magic of Eastern music (sitar, tabla, flutes, santoor, etc) with transparent and modern Western sounds. These hypnotic grooves, fine textures and rich melodies will transport the listener to a cross-cultural mythic land of golden radiance.

Songs For The Inner Lover

Graced by Deva Premal's vocal harmonies, Miten’s songs take flight, seamlessly blending male/female energy to reveal the healing balance that comes through true connection with the self. Miten created Songs For The Inner Lover as a soundtrack for the love and life experiences we all share. Insightful lyrics and refreshingly simple, melodic arrangements examine the many faces of love: from its manifestation on the physical plane and the master-disciple relationship to longing for meaningful companionship and the inner dialogues we conduct with ourselves. Through their long and storied musical and life partnership together, Miten and best-selling mantra singer Deva Premal have created a true heart connection with each other and thousands of adoring fans worldwide. On Songs For The Inner Lover, Miten draws from that nourishing experience to offer a truthful and universal sentiment sure to provide healing comfort to all who are touched by love--or long to be.

Sufi Splendor
Artist : Manish Vyas
The dervish’s whirling is a meditation—communion and contemplation—set to music; the calm center of a spiritual cyclone. Sufi Splendor: Music for Whirling Meditation captures the music that drives this resplendent and timeless practice. Serpentine ney (flute), melodic santoor, impassioned singing and ancient frame drum form a hypnotic rhythmic engine, building in intensity and carrying the listener to whirling ecstasy. Recorded in India’s Ishvani Kendra monastery, Sufi Splendor: Music for Whirling Meditation features seasoned musicians, masters of the sema’a (Sufi ceremony), performing this irresistible music that propelled the original trance dancers. The Persian mystic poet Rumi, founder of the Mevlana Dervish brotherhood, wrote, “…Music uplifts the soul to realms above. The ashes glow, the latent fires increase. We listen and are fed with joy and peace.” Immensely enjoyable for straight listening, truly indispensable for inner exploration, Sufi Splendor: Music for Whirling Meditation places the listener at the tranquil heart of that latent fire.

The Essence
Artist : Deva Premal
This top selling New Age/World beat CD is smooth, silky, calming and peaceful. Featuring Deva Premal's transcendant voice, ambient grooves, keyboard and hand percussion, THE ESSENCE invokes the heart healing power of ancient chants and mantras. The Gayatri Mantra, the oldest known to mankind, is the centerpiece of this truly meditative CD. Ideal for yoga, healing work, meditation and dancing.

This Dewdrop World
Artist : Suvarna
After the success of her first two recordings—the upbeat Fire of the Oracle and rhythmic Energia (by Infinity)—vocalist/violinist Suvarna takes her raga-based vocal improvisations into a more laid back, intimate space on This Dewdrop World. Her latest effort plays like an aural massage: the songs unfold naturally, drawing the listener into a relaxed world of lush sonic textures and mantric ambience far removed from the frenetic pace of daily life. This Dewdrop World features a world of instruments including kora, violin, saz, oud, mandolin and tabla, all expertly orchestrated by producer Martyn Phillips (Was Not Was, Soul II Soul, Khaled) to complement Suvarna’s gracefully confident voice. Dedicated to “all who are striving for awakening,” This Dewdrop World is sublime accompaniment for introspective journeys and a delicate musical acknowledgment of life’s beauty.

Water Down the Ganges
Artist : Prem Joshua and Manish Vyas
The River Ganges plays an integral role in India’s everyday culture and spirituality. This watery ribbon feeds the land and cleanses the souls of millions on its winding journey from the Himalayas to the sea. Inspired by the legendary river’s mythic power, world travelers and long-time collaborators Prem Joshua and Manish Vyas, east-west alchemists of the highest order, invite you to take a trip down your “inner Ganges.” Imbued with rich images of the East, Water Down The Ganges flows languidly from lush meditative ambience into rhythmic celebration of the great river of life. Disciples of some of India’s most respected master musicians, Joshua and Manish present this masterfully crafted recording, a perfect balance between acoustic clarity and electronic boldness. Just as one never stands in the same river twice, Water Down the Ganges offers a refreshingly new experience with each listen.

African Dream
Artist : Shaman’s Dream
When Los Angeles' Shaman's Dream gets ready to perform — "live" or in the studio — its members call upon the powers of nature to bring healing and positive transformation to their music. Like the shamans who take us into the spirit world to enlist the help of guides, animals, and nature, these prolific musicians use the same sounds, chants, and rhythms to take listeners on a musical pilgrimage to the mystical, primal heart of Africa. Here they serve up a delicious ethno-jammin' blend of chant, fusion, and deep groove for body centered movement, dance, or serious trans-dimensional drifting. The album features Donna DeLory, Dido Tshibangu, Marcel Adjibi, Abdou Mbaya, and Masai village men and women from the Serengeti plains.

Yatri
Artist : Prem Joshua
In the vast scope of his musical expression, Prem Joshua, himself a Yatri (traveller) beyond musical traditions, creates an inspired collection of songs that reflect a deep love affair with India. People down the ages have heard a calling to sacred places within and without. In the East this journey is called Yatra (pilgrimage). If you feel this call — let this album be your travel companion.

Earth n Bass - Volume One
Artist : TriLoka - (Various Artists)
Earth N Bass fuses international sounds with electronica, merging eclectic traditions with digital futurism. Just as animal hide was molded into drum skins, humankind has harnessed iron and steel to create a diverse blend of down-tempo, four-on-the-floor and big beat rhythms to dance and lounge to. Turn it on, turn it up and discover the future... Featuring new music and remixes by Transglobal Underground (Tarika), Peter Kruder (Bebel Gilberto), Bill Laswell (Gigi), Manu Chao, Karsh Kale, Dub Farm (Krishna Das), Ex-Centric Sound System, Temple of Sound and more....

Journey
Artist : Ali Akbar Khan
At 67, veteran Indian music master Ali Akbar Khan successfully blends tradition and technology on Journey, a moving CD produced by his protege and student Jai Uttal. Journey, however, isn't modern secular Indian pop, but rather is best described as traditional Indian spiritual and devotional music using high-tech elements. Under Uttal's direction, Khan's sarod and other acoustic Indian instruments like the sitar, the tabla and the dholak successfully interact with electronic synthesizers (none of which sound forced or mechanical). Uttal had learned a lot from Khan, and showed his appreciation by seeing to it that technology was used soulfully throughout this album.

Prem
Artist : Snatam Kaur
A Chant Album from the Sacred Writings of the Sikhs to experience Love. Prem means the experience of love, deep love. It is the love that you have the courage and wisdom to feel in yourself for yourself, it is the love that God feels for you. We project ourselves through every moment of time and space whether it is through sounds, thoughts, or feelings. The gift of every human being is to truly express the soul through the intelligence of the mind and body. Often times however we are burdened with so many expectations and desires of what we should be that we cannot truly express who we are. If you take a 60 second period and just watch your mind you will observe a cycle of experience that is identical to a longer cycle of experience over a day, a month, a year, a lifetime. It doesn’t matter how long you observe your mind; it is what it is. We cycle through receiving information, processing it, and then projecting out our reality through the medium of sound, thought, or feeling.

Shiva Station
Artist : Jai Uttal and the Pagan Love Orchestra
Jai Uttal's 1997 album Shiva Station continues his eclectic fusion of Indian musical traditions with jazz and electronic elements. Sinuous, spontaneous pieces like "Guru Brahma," "Bhajore," and "Jaya Jagadambe (She Who Tears Apart Thought)" combine a loose, improvised feel with lush arrangements that include sitars, tablas, violins, banjos, trombones, and electric guitars. Bill Laswell's production adds to the organic, seemingly effortless blend of old, new, improvised, and structured musical styles on Shiva Station.

Afrika Wassa
Artist : Vieux Diop
From Mozambique to Nigeria to Ethiopia, many African pop artists use Western instruments exclusively. They're still embracing African rhythms, but they use western instruments to play them and exclude traditional African instruments like the kora (a string instrument with a harp-like sound), the mbira (one of Africa's various thumb pianos), and the kalimba. Vieux Diop, however, is among the African pop vocalists who favors a combination of African and Western instruments. On 2000's Afrika Wassa, the kora and other traditional African instruments interact with the drums, bass, and guitar. A native of Senegal who has lived in the U.S. since 1984, Diop is no stranger to multiculturalism -- on Afrika Wassa, he sings in Senegalese languages as well as English and French. His style of African pop isn't hyper and ultra-exuberant a la soukous, makossa, and zouk -- nor is it moody, smoky and jazz-influenced like a lot of Ethiopian and Sudanese pop. Rather, Diop goes for a gentle, relaxed, reflective approach and sometimes incorporates elements of American folk. Afrika Wassa isn't for dancing; it's best to sit down and listen to this charming, heartfelt CD.

Garden Of Dreams
Artist : Ali Akbar Khan
Maestro Ali Akbar Khan and a thirteen-piece East/West orchestra follow up his critically acclaimed Journey, performing classical ragas and Rajasthani folk songs. Combining sarod with Western classical instruments such as the cello, violin, bassoon and oboe, Khansahb brilliantly merges Eastern and Western musical traditions to produce an album of astounding beauty. The title song, "Garden of Dreams," explores memories of paradise and is an original raga composed by Khansahb. "Dhani," with guest artist Zakir Hussain, features a wind section of oboe, bassoon and native Australian didgeridoo. Also featured (and produced by) Jai Uttal.

Meeting Rivers
Artist : Mpath
Producers Gardner Cole and Mitchell Markus merge their assorted talents to construct the multifaceted studio experiment M Path. Their first disc, Meeting Rivers, on Markus' Triloka label, links trance, pop, and traditional Indian music, making this a worthwhile project for listeners of modern world music to investigate. The combination of sampling, percussion, tabla, violin, and the appearance of sarangi master Ramesh Mishra makes for an intriguing, eclectic project.

Mothers Blessing
Artist : Prabhu Nam Kaur and Snatam Kaur
On this gentle, deeply moving album, the intimate, musical conversation between mother and daughter wraps you in a soothing blanket of sound. Five classical kirtan tracks feature the rich vocal interplay between Prabhu Nam Kaur and her daughter, Snatam Kaur. Accompanied by layers of tabla, harmonium, viola, bansuri, keyboards, guitar and bass guitar. These devotional hymns are from the Sikh tradition of Gurbani Kirtan. The words are direct transmissions from the Sound Current, recited by Amar Das, the bards Satte and Balwand, and Guru Arjan, who lived in 16th century India. Anyone who sings or listens to these words with meditative mind and heart will be transported into the Sound Current from which the words have come.

Wanderer
Artist : Mpath
Some records are indisputably world music. Others are much more world beat, poking a toe into other cultures while retaining more mainstream elements of their own country's musical sound. This is the latter. The melodies are American and reasonably catchy, but dressed in Indian colors that fit surprisingly well. The brainchild of multi-instrumentalist Gardner Cole, it might not be the spiritual sound they discuss in the liner notes, but it's certainly pleasant, and at times quite wonderful, when violinist Lily Haydn lets loose. There's really nothing to criticize here (except perhaps the production on a couple of tracks, where the meters sound as though they're far into the red); it's simply a pleasant record. And that, unfortunately, is the damning with faint praise. It's catchy, but there's little that truly sticks in the mind. Everything is competent and enjoyable, but not especially memorable. There's little doubt Cole's heart is in the right place, and he's obviously studied Indian music before grafting it onto his own. But the foreign element still feels to be that -- foreign, never completely integrated into the whole. Still, a pleasant listen

Buddha-Cloud
Artist : Jason Shulman
This spontaneous collection of songs, music and lyrics were created in the moment by Jason Shulman (vocals, harmonium) along with musicians James Mark (violin, viola) and Kai Kurosawa (Worr guitar) and produced by Michael Frondelli. These songs provide a transformative listening experience in which one can listen to the process of creation crafted with a tender heart.

Temple Of The Heart
Artist : Temple Bhajan Band
This CD is the latest creation of The Temple Bhajan band. With very brisk call/response kirtan, ancient mantras, and bhajan sung in traditional style by western singers, it’s a must for every world music enthusiast. Temple of the Heart is a beautiful composition of modern duets, harmonies and music combined with traditional ancient mantras, chants and bhajans. Most of the songs are sung by Mahalaxmi and Sura. She sings sweet celestial soprano which mixes with Sura’s raspy (old blues singer ) voice, to create a kind of “Beauty and the Beast” scenario. Adwaita plays the mrdunga drum, which slowly brings the chanting to its crescendo again and again.

Love of Ages
Artist : Sheetal
Love of Ages is the debut album from Sheetal, formerly of the Zen Cowboys. In Love of Ages, she attempts to mix her Indian upbringing with Western musical forms from her American training. The basic idea is to take one of the revered ragas and mix in some aspects of Western harmony and theory as needed. Surprisingly, the result of the mix between East and West is pretty close to something Celtic. Sheetal lays out some ethereal vocals, often moving between various Indian languages and English as appropriate and putting a base of synths, drum machines, and tanpuras under the vocals. The album overall rarely quite choose one style or the other, but stays on the middle road, which makes it into a fine example of new age world music in many ways. The trance of Zen Cowboys is present to some degree, and aspects of both cultures are present to some degree. The key is the mix, and this album comes near the perfect points -- not quite reaching the full potential of fusion, but circling around that epicenter.

DownTemple Dub_ Flames
Artist : Desert Dwellers
Desert Dwellers continue their yoga dub odyssey into the soul of the global heartbeat. Like sonic incense, this spellbinding hybrid of studio and field recordings burns with a boldly modern sound reverberating with echoes of our tribal past- and future.

Trancendence
Artist : Tulku
Intimate and sensual, fervent and powerful, Tulku weaves a global music tapestry whose melodies engulf the rhythms of trance. Combining sampled sounds from around the world with the warmth and organic qualities of live percussion, vocals and a variety of melodic instruments, Tulku creates a new body for an ancient soul.

Parting Glass
Artist : Emer Kenny
Emer Kenny's third outing follows up well on her previous two discs, essentially managing the same mix of traditional Irish with beats and programming, along with three of her own pieces. She's an attractive enough singer in the Sinéad O'Connor mold, with a slightly wispy voice that conveys hurt and loneliness well. However, she's at her best when the arrangements are at their sparsest and most natural. She doesn't always need the buoyancy of beats underneath her; sometimes a little silence can be far more effective. You have to wonder, too, about some of the song choices here -- does the world really need another take on "Scarborough Fair" or "She Moves Through the Fair," especially when these versions are going to be measured against other, better ones and found desperately wanting? This time, too, there seems to be little invention in the beats, as if they'd just been slung together and put in there with rudimentary rebar to hold the structures together. Kenny's own "Breton Dance" makes a sprightly enough ending, but neither "Cast a Spell" nor "Rescue Me," the other efforts from own pen, carry much weight against the power of the tradition. Next time it would be interesting to hear her do a completely acoustic album and turn her back on what seems to be rapidly becoming blandness. [Parting Glass was also released featuring a bonus Junior Vasquez mix of "Cast a Spell."]

Union
Artist : Rasa
Union, the follow-up to Rasa's stunning debut, Devotion, finds the intriguing duo taking the next logical step by updating traditional Sanskrit and Bengali prayers. These timeless texts are fleshed out with vocalist Kim Waters' sensual tones wending round Hans Christian's soulful cello leads, which are in turn complemented by understated keyboards, guitars, drums, and percussion. The album's thematic and emotional center is found in the deeply reverent "Sri Guru." An 11-minute supplication, the composition builds on gently looped vocals and shakers to burst forth as a full band swirl of elegant, sublime sound featuring flute, ambient percussion, and mouth harp. Reveling in textural earthly arrangements, Rasa makes music for the body as well as the spirit.

Season Of Souls
Artist : Tulku
Using a variety of different ethnic singers, Tulku demonstrates the similarities of these strains of folk music. Leader Jim Wilson is the composer of these themes, plays synthesizer and electric keyboards, and is helped by a changing rotation of musicians through music that is derived from Persian, Australian, Egyptian, Eastern and Native American Indian, and Mayan sources. This is world or perhaps new age music, with a smattering of improvisation accenting textures of processed sound with natural elements and siderial female vocals added. Three pieces are very similar to Jon Hassell's voodoo priestess contingent. "Fields of Offering," "The Falcon," and the title track all have that ethereal quality: the first with ancient Egyptian text sung in native phrasings and English, the second a spellbinding praise to a higher power, the third a love of god anthem. In many cases a rock beat is prevalent. "Heart of Heaven, Heart of Earth" has an invocation by Don Alexandro, a seventh generation Mayan medicine man from Guatemala, floating above the 4/4 beat. A hip-hop rhythm centers "Tipari," with Tim Reynolds' slide guitar adding contrast. "Meena Devi" brings American rock and spacy drone together. The most compelling track, "Spiral Dance," is a wraithlike swirl, and "Cold Mountain Meltdown" is once again rockish, but in a space ethnic synthesized fashion. The Native American chanting of group vocals and percussion of "Life Eternal," and the Aboriginal bent of "The Fire That Speaks" with didgeridoo, bullroarer, and wolfhound howls with a rock beat and pained vocals, makes for a unique sound. This is a most intriguing recording, one where in many instances the undertow of sounds is much more compelling than what's on top.

Winter Moons
Artist : Spirit Nation
Grooves have been laid down under every imaginable style of music and in every thinkable language. So why not, you might ask, in Saulteaux/Ojibway, a traditional Native American dialect? Don't fret, Spirit Nation has answered your prayers right here, right now with Winter Moons. (So you don't think you're crazy, be forewarned that a couple of lines in Hebrew get snuck into "All My Relations" as a nod to vocalist Tamara Podenski's Israeli father.) It's all the rage, this dance beat/traditional tune thing. Mike D produced a similarly vibed disc of East Indian chanting for Bhagavan Das. Lost in the rhythms as you might get, it is always a little disconcerting when they switch to English or you read the translation. In this case, the lyrics are all about the seven generations, the seven clan animals, the seven spirit beings, and the seven gifts of the seven senses. Oh yeah, and the four directions and five moons for five months of winter. Admirable and inspiring as they are, they're just not necessarily something you want to think about while you're in that pulse. An unusual and intriguing little record.

Dream Song
Artist : Little Wolf Band
Little Wolf Band is the creation of Native American producer/performer Jim Wilson, a project that means to celebrate Native American songs as living things, as sources and keepers of wisdom, emotion and spirit. Wilson has achieved this with a sterling blend of samples and beats, mixing in some live instruments and live voices to help shape his work. If NA songs are seen as keys to doors to different states of being, states of mind, then this is a collection of keys. Given this, Wilson has crafted an album of fine assists to a trance state, one that bears up well under auto-repeat, even endless shuffle play. The mixtures of samples have an intriguingly hypnotic effect, pleasant and beguiling, mysterious and yet comforting.

A Drop Of The Ocean
Artist : Sultan Khan & Krishna Das
An interesting collaboration between Sultan Khan, the undisputed master of the sarangi (a bit of a dying instrument in itself due to the difficulty and pain involved in playing it) and Jeffrey Kagel, aka Krishna Das, a leader in updating chant accompaniment, among other things. It would seem at first glance that a master of accompaniment would work well with a sarangi player (itself often an accompanying instrument), but at the same time there's the potential for no lead to be taken whatsoever. During portions of the album, this is exactly what seems to be the case, as Khan can play out a beautiful bit of backing material alongside some electronics, neither of which take the forefront. For the majority of the album though, there is a definite focus. Khan gets the opportunity to take extended journeys on solo sarangi with great mastery displayed throughout. In other sections, the two take turns singing and chanting, often accompanied softly by guitarist (and incidentally composer of Midnight at the Oasis) David Nichtern. The end result of this is a very ambient sort of album, with a lot of exceptional sarangi to be heard.

Kiran Ahluwalia
Artist : Kiran Ahluwalia
Kiran Ahluwalia was once a bond trader and is now a full-time musician with a fascinating and unusual mission: she writes and sings modern songs in the ghazal tradition -- one that originated in tenth century Persia and was transplanted to her native India in the 14th century. She also interprets traditional Punjabi folk songs, songs that form the basis of modern bhangra. But her influences range much farther than her native country's cultural traditions; Canada is her adopted home, and on this album she is accompanied by guest artists who include the acclaimed Cape Breton fiddler Natalie MacMaster, whose playing adds a strange but lovely dimension to the beautiful "Jhanjra"; on that track, guitarist Rez Abbasi serves as a stylistic bridge between MacMaster's skirling Celtic lines and the more traditional percussion and sung melody, by playing Indian scales in a bluegrass-inflected, flatpicking style. For the most part, though, this album sounds less like an experiment in cross-cultural fusion than simply an honestly modern version of the ancient ghazal tradition -- its roots are firmly in the past, but jazzy chords and unusual instrumentation remind you that the music of this region is no more immune than any other to the effects of global communication. The album's highlight track is its final one, a gorgeous and contemplative number titled "Awara." Very highly recommended.

Adi Shakti Gobinde Mukande
Artist : Gurudass
Gurudass Kaur sings with beauty and power in a call and answer style with a group of singers on the 'Adi Shakti' mantra. Adi Shakti calls upon the Divine Mother, the Infinite and powerful.

Monkey
Artist : Jai Uttal
On Monkey, young Jai Uttal continued to fuse Indian spiritual music and American pop with generally pleasing results. Once again, he demonstrates his mastery of acoustic Indian instruments like the harmonium and the dotar while using electronic synthesizers in a very human and soulful fashion. Though some of the material bears some resemblance to secular Indian pop of the '90s, which also unites synthesizers and traditional instruments, Uttal's overall approach is far from secular. While Uttal's own songs (both instrumental and with vocals) are dominant, "Govinda" is a moving version of the time-honored Hindu prayer. Jazz improviser Peter Apfelbaum is heard on both tenor sax and drums, and a fair amount of jazz influence asserts itself on "The Hooded Serpent" and the title song.

Tunula Eno
Artist : Samite
Samite's Tunula Eno is a musical memoir about the last year of the Ugandan singer/songwriter's wife's life. Unlike many similar records -- the Eels' Electro-Shock Blues, about the deaths of singer/songwriter E's mother and sister, comes immediately to mind -- Tunula Eno is not a difficult, depressing listen. Of course, this may well have much to do with the fact that the average Western listener won't understand the lyrics, which are written in Samite's native tongue, but even on a musical level, there's a lightness to Tunula Eno, a buoyancy familiar to fans of Ugandan and other South African musics, that lifts the spirits even on comparatively downbeat songs, like the delicate title track, or "Yazala Arambuti": reveries for voice and acoustic guitar that would not sound out of place on one of Cat Stevens' early-'70s records. The closing "Dawaya Mwoyo," a mostly-instrumental farewell for thumb piano and percussion, ends the album on an elegiac but oddly uplifting note.

Soul Makassar
Artist : Tarika
Its title a play on Manu Dibango's 1973 worldwide smash, "Soul Maskossa," this album sees Tarika delving deep into the roots of Malagasy music -- 1,500 years deep, in fact, the period when Indonesians settled the island off the African coast known as Big Red. Recorded in Sulawesi and Bandung, as well as the band's London base, it's still very definitely a record of music from Madagascar, with the tubular valiha harp and the zither-like marovany combining delightfully with acrobatic guitar work. But the framework of songs like "Sulwesi" and "Baraka" have an Indonesia touch, while "Tovovavy" introduces a strain that bears an odd resemblance to American alt-country --- country and Madagascar. The closer, "Madindo," even has a Malagasy rap that doesn't sound out of place. Group leader Hanitra Rasoanaivo has done her research thoroughly, connecting the two cultures, reaching back to her own past with "Malalko," which most listeners will recognize as "Be My Baby," a song she heard as a local 1970s hit for a band called Les Surfs. Guests, including former 3 Mustaphas 3 bassist Sabah Habas Mustapha and one-time Small Face Ian McLagan on Hammond organ, offer subtle contributions, and this remains very much a band disc. Not quite a concept record the way their earlier Son Egal was, it certainly adds a new twist to the idea of roots music, and stands as another milestone in a glowing career.

Unbearable Love
Artist : Walela
The Coolidge sisters return as Walla with another dose of new-age gospel. Unfortunately, the blending of Native American motifs with heavy synthesizer and highly produced vocal harmonies makes the overblown spiritual message seem rather smarmy. Indeed, it's pretty difficult to find true inspiration in saccharine tunes like "Gathering of Eagles" and "The Sequence."

Walela
Artist : Walela
Familial vocal trio Walela's self-titled debut album is also their finest to date, an amalgamation of Native American roots music (specifically Cherokee), singer/songwriter folk, pop, and Southern gospel that's also not unappealing to new age sensibilities. Although the music is deeply rooted in tradition, its hybrid uniqueness gives it a contemporary, even forward-looking feel. The angelic three-part harmonies of Rita Coolidge, sister Priscilla, and niece Laura Satterfield breathe exquisite life into these songs, which are already strong to begin with; the results constitute one of the best issues of contemporary Native American music in some time.

Tibet - Cry Of The Snow Lion
Artist : Jeff Beal
Every film score presents a unique dramatic and emotional challenge. Trying to find music to accompany a film that so thoroughly chronicles the richness of Tibetan Buddhism, the political tragedy of occupation, and the countless stories of personal sacrifice and suffering, was a vast puzzle to solve. Utilizing many extraordinary field recordings that the filmmakers captured on their many visits to Tibet, Jeff Beal’s first step was to incorporate these elements into “instruments” with which to write. These field recordings in fact included many inspiring Tibetan chants that became the basis used to create themes and cues including “One Human Life”, “The Celebration”, and fervent title track “Cry of The Snow Lion”. Flute and piano improvisations evolved into the tracks “The Mandala” and “Peace Prayer”. On other tracks the majesty of the film’s images became the artists’ muse. Nawang’s personal relationships with many of the people chronicled in the film added a heightened emotional sensibility to this passionate and radiant work Tibet: Cry Of The Snow Lion is an enhanced CD containing three music videos featuring footage from the film and a bonus MP3 track “Freedom Suite (Duet for Trumpet and Tibetan Horn)”, believed to be the first ever duet improvisation between a jazz trumpet player and a Tibetan horn player!

Language Of Love - Music For The Kama Sutra
Artist : Craig Pruess
Language Of Love is a sensual musical work inspired by the timeless Indian writings of spiritual and physical love the Kama Sutra. The Kama Sutra, written sometime during India's Classical Age (320-540 AD) is much more than an ancient sex manual. Indeed, it is a treatise on engaging the five physical senses - hearing, touch, smell, taste and vision - to allow body, soul and spirit to be elevated through love. It is this goal that Craig Pruess aspired to in the creation of the music for Language of Love. Many are the moods evoked on Language of Love: romantic, passionate, serene and sexual. As Craig reflects 'The intention (sankalpa) behind this CD is very simple: music specifically imagined, composed, performed and recorded to help create an environment for loving and heart-centered sex - lively and yet settled; attention on beauty and the universal connection of breath, sound and form; compassionate, giving and caring; fun, playful, light and uplifting; meditative and deep.'

One Truth
Artist : Omar Faruk Tekbilek
Turkish virtuoso Omar Faruk Tekbilek opens a window into the divine passion and poetry of Sufism, the mystical sect of Islam. Burning performances on Middle Eastern instruments, intricate rhythms and intense devotional songs of slowly unfolding magnificence create an ideal world where old and new cultures comingle and time is suspended in the One Truth of music.

Kirtan - The Great Mantra From The Himalayas, Vol. 1
Artist : TriLoka - (Various Artists)
Think of this as a field recording disc, since that's what it is, taken from tapes made by the label heads over the years at an Indian ashram. In other words, it's true chanting for a sacred purpose in a holy place, instead of a disc custom-made in a studio. And that's how it should be. But to judge it as music is both unfair and difficult. The chants are what they are, ways to praise and to achieve a heightened state, and they're not sung by professionals, but by monks and devotees. Aptly, the chants aren't called by name, but by number. They're hypnotic, and certainly draw in the listener, but what you make of them is what you will, nothing more or less.

Meditations on the Gita
Artist : Ram Dass
Personnel include: Ram Dass (spoken vocals); John McDowell (various instruments). Ram Dass came to prominence in the 1950s and '60s as Dr. Richard Alpert (one of Dr. Timothy Leary's cohorts in the early experiments with LSD), and has continued a path of personal exploration and spiritual practice ever since. MEDITATIONS ON THE GITA combines readings by Ram Dass from the Bhagavad-Gita with musical accompaniment from a variety of guests. These include keyboardists John McDowell, bansuri player Steve Gorn, and vocalists Diana Rogers and Shyamdas, who join Dass in extended chants. The music is peaceful, soothing, and highlights the pearls of wisdom Das dispenses from the Gita, creating an overall experience conducive to meditation and self-realization.

The Katurran Odyssey
Artist : Jeff Johnson and Brian Dunning
The Katurran Odyssey is a wonder-filled musical journey of contemporary instrumental music sure to delight and inspire both those listeners who are familiar with the book and those who are not. Johnson’s richly exotic keyboards and production is full of wonderfully, organic backdrops for the incredible improvisational skills of Dunning (flute) and Fitzpatrick (violin), along with Slovakian cellist, Jozef Lupák and classical singer, Janet Chvatal.

Planet Chant
Artist : TriLoka - (Various Artists)
"Planet Chant is a moving an hypnotic exploration of the possibilities of the human voice, which includes British, Russian, Tibetan, Bulgarian, South African and Native American contribution. A veritable multilateral force." -- Creative Loafing "Planet Chant - Triloka takes a different approach to global compilation with this gathering of largely vocal music. Intriguing...from the chanting of Lama Gyurme and Choying Drolma to the choral sounds of Ladysmith Black Mambazo and the Bulgarian ensemble Angelite." -- LA Times About the Collection Chant has been practiced as a spiritual tradition for centuries, and virtually every culture, past and present, has chanted in some form or another. Its legacy is as long as it is rich and varied. Planet Chant includes a number of chant traditions: Tibetan Buddhist, Qawwali, Hindu, Zulu, Bhakti Yoga, the peyote songs of The Native American Church, early music of the Russian Orthodox Church and 14th century Spanish Catalonia, as well as contemporary interpretations of chant. The chants on Planet Chant are performed by some of the most gifted proponents of the genre including the Qawwali master Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan from Pakistan, Ladysmith Black Mambazo from South Africa, contemporary Native American singers Primeaux and Mike, Indian chanteuse Sheila Chandra, The Orthodox Bulgarian choir Angelite and the east-west styling of Krishna Das.

The Chord of Love
Artist : Ram Dass
Baba Ram Dass (born Richard Alpert) is best known as Timothy Leary's sidekick during the lysergic era, but where Leary had a pranksterish quality that made him more of a media-friendly hippie icon, Ram Dass was a much more earnest spiritual seeker who went early into a devoted study of Indian religions and cultures and stayed there. This made for much less interesting copy, so he was largely forgotten by the time Altamont rolled around. 1994's The Chord of Love, however, proves that Ram Dass stuck to his beliefs long after they were no longer fashionable: an album of traditional chants led by noted singers Krishna Das and Jai Uttal -- "Govinda Jai Jai" and "Om Namah Shivaya" are two that might be familiar to those who have explored Indian music and religion -- and readings from the Bhagavad Gita by Ram Dass in his familiar sonorous baritone, all set to simple, completely traditional Indian instrumentation, The Chord of Love is beautifully, deeply spiritual.

One Track Heart
Artist : Krishna Das
Hardcore followers of Indian religious philosophy may find much to recommended in these modernizations of traditional Bhakti Yoga chants. But the yogi rock created by Das along with Jai Uttal and Jim Wilson may strike nonbelievers as too guileless to survive the electrification process. Ethnic Indian experimentation with external forms are one thing, since they usually redistribute the weight of sufficient cultural baggage to yield interesting results. But this disc begins with a feeling of secondhandedness and from there borrows yet again, leaving the listener decidedly shortchanged.

Pilgrim Heart
Artist : Krishna Das
It's hard to say whether hindsight is an effective tool or not when it comes to music. To look with a critical eye back over the span of an artist's career may not be exactly fair, but it seems quite useful to a listener trying to make a selection of, say, a greatest-hits collection versus individual releases. The work of Krishna Das is a great example. If you examine his albums closely, you will begin to notice a few trends in the track listings. More than once has he done "Hanuman Chaleesa," "Devi Puja," and "Hara Hara Mahadeva," though the former makes nary an appearance on this particular record. However, Sting does. He chirps his way through "Mountain Hare Krishna" with that ever-entrancing Sting voice of his. Of course, the song "Mountain Hare Krishna" was reincarnated on Das' Live on Earth release in 1999. What to do? If you're a hardcore kirtan lover, then you'll want this on your shelf. If you're only looking for a Das sampler, you'd do better to pick up his Live on Earth. That way you throw a wider net capturing his work, and as a bonus you get to avoid the very odd, slightly disconcerting, calypso-style "The Ring Song."

Door of Faith
Artist : Krishna Das
Krishna Das continues his spiritual albums, mixing Indian inflections with a Western base (which comes in the way the songs are constructed, often owing a lot to folk music). Produced by Rick Rubin, this has a wonderful, full sound with some excellent touches, like the emotional cello on "Sita's Prayer." It's a very slow album -- the pieces blooming gradually like flowers -- intended to give its pleasure over time rather than in a single play. While this is obviously a commercial venture, it's also a labor of love and devotion. And make no mistake, it is a truly lovely disc, accessible in its structures (in fact, "Shri Hanuman Chaleesa" would be a rock song if it had a drum kit) and its style, thanks in part to Rubin and his experience. This would be excellent as a meditation aid, but it also transcends that to become a fascinating listening experience throughout. Das sounds like Tom Waits without the voice cracks, which is no bad thing -- his voice is somewhat hypnotic, as befits the music he's making. The underlying sample (a processed voice?) on the last track adds texture to what's really a country song in disguise, altering it completely. A record that's an experience in every possible way.

Greatest Hits Of The Kali Yuga
Artist : Krishna Das
GREATEST HITS OF THE KALI YUGA collects the highlights from five of spiritual leader/singer Krishna Das's albums (plus one new track and a remix). A disciple of devotional yoga and kirtan (chanting the names of God), Krishna Das creates a remarkably effective combination of traditional Indian chanting and Western pop structures and melodies. Harmonium and tabla blend with guitar, bass, violin, and auxiliary percussion in ways that bridge East and West, giving rise to a stirring spiritual music that is both catchy and meditative. GREATEST HITS also includes a full-length DVD, a documentary on Krishna Das entitled ONE LIFE AT A TIME. In addition to illustrating Das's dedication to bringing the wisdom of Eastern spirituality to the ears of Western music fans (the DVD includes some fine concert footage), the documentary also charts Das's long path of discovery, including his experiences in India and his enduring friendship with Ram Dass (a.k.a. Dr. Richard Alpert). It is a fascinating document, and complements the music nicely, making this a highly worthwhile package.

Celtic Twilight 2
Artist : Hearts of Space - (Various)
It's another journey to the timeless place where whistles and fiddles, harps and pipes, guitar and piano play in a fantastic landscape of synthesizers and electronic woodwinds. To our great delight, our first compilation in this series became an international hit: over a year on Billboard's Top New Age Albums chart and still counting, the #1 Indie New Age Album of the Year!

Live On Earth
Artist : Krishna Das
Considered the leading Western proponent of kirtan chanting, Krishna Das shows his stuff on the double-disc Live on Earth. The live setting is where Das really shines, with posse in tow generally singing in the traditional call-and-response fashion. Devotion flows through his husky baritone voice and enthusiasm abounds in the claps of the group. This is how these mantras are meant to be sung, their blessings showering down on every chanter. The explosive "Radhe Shyam" and "Samadhi Sita Ram" open the session with a bang while praising the glory of Govinda and Ram along with their consorts, Radha and Sita. Then, a hush falls and stillness overwhelms when Das and bansuri flutist Steve Gorn offer themselves at the feet of the guru with "Shri Guru Charanam." Going on like this, balancing the ecstatic and the solemn while holding the sacred, Das makes his offerings to all of the major Hindu deities -- Krishna, Hanuman, Kali, Lakshmi, Rama, and Shiva. Particularly enchanting is the ancient hymn "Hanuman Chaleesa." Das sings it to please his own guru, though it was composed in honor of the monkey god Hanuman, noble hero of the great Indian epic Ramayana. One of the most well-known nama sankirtanas in the West repeats the names of Hare Rama Hare Krishna. Das includes two different renditions, "Three Rivers Hare Krishna" and "Mountain Hare Krishna," perhaps signifying his own fondness for the simple beauty of this chant. For the most part, Das sticks with the tried and true Indian instrumentation of harmonium and percussion to create his sound, though he does add a bit of keyboard, cello, and bass to smooth out the edges and truly make it his own. That's fair, and the result is splendid.

Breath Of The Heart
Artist : Krishna Das
According to ancient Indian scriptures and saints, the traditional practice of chanting God's name -- be it Krishna, Rama, Ganesh, or another of the numerous deities -- is a tried and true path leading to union with the divine. Kirtan is one of the main forms of this practice, wherein a leader sings out the call and a group echoes with a response. Breath of the Heart is a live recording of Krishna Das in such a setting. Of course, being a westerner, he rounds out the sound with a little more than the customary harmonium and drum of the "motherland," adding Rob McDonald's solid electric bass, Lili Haydn's exquisite though underused violin, and Steve Gorn's mystical bansuri flute, along with various percussion and such. A single kirtan can go on for as long as the leader feels appropriate, although here Krishna Das limits the pieces to not more than 15 minutes or so. That's just enough to get you going before he moves on to the next, which is good for newcomers but perhaps frustrating for true practitioners. For the result is a quick build that doesn't allow you to so much linger in the melody, but rather pulls you along with the rhythm. It's a forgivable consequence when taking his audience into consideration. Nevertheless, with Rick Rubin at the production helm and topnotch musicianship supporting Das' instantly recognizable voice, the combination is a truly enjoyable, and possibly enlightening, offering.

Lotus Feet A Kirtan Revolution
Artist : David Newman
Lotus Feet: A Kirtan Revolution was born out of a vision to express the healing power of Indian devotional chanting, known as Kirtan, in a contemporary western musical context. The goal was to both respect the chanting tradition while staying true to the sensibilities of the western singer songwriter idiom. On Lotus Feet, ancient chants are rich with catchy hooks, evocative melodies, and passionate chord changes. Pop song structures are laced with Sanskrit mantras accented by English lyrics. Acoustic guitars are propelled by world rhythms, hip hop loops, dance grooves and ambient textures. The mantras are the message and the music the messenger. The chants embody a universal language of peace and love while the musical presentation strikes a familiar chord in the western ear and psyche. Lotus Feet: A Kirtan Revolution offers a gift from the heart of the east on the wings of the west straight to you, the listener, as cosmic sonic nourishment for the Body and Soul.

Mantra Yoga
Artist : Temple Bhajan Band
Mantra Yoga CD: This new CD is a beautiful composition of modern duets, harmonies, and music combined with traditional ancient mantras, chants and bhajans. Most of the songs are sung by Mahalaxmi and Sura. She sings sweet celestial soprano which mixes with Sura's raspy (old blues singer ) voice, to create a kind of Beauty and the Beast scenario. Mahalaxmi sang with the Australian National Choir for 5 years and her pristine angelic presence is felt throughout the CD. Adwaita plays the mrdunga drum, which slowly brings the chanting to its' crescendo again and again. Several men and women make up the background and harmony vocals to make this CD soulful, mellow and timeless.

The Ancient Art Music Of China - Yangqin
Artist : Lily Yuan
This CD of ancient art music of China presents the yangqin (pronounced yang chin) performed by Lily Yuan, one of the foremost Chinese yangqin players. The instrument is a hammered dulcimer; that is to say, the Chinese version of the East European cimbalom or the Indian and Middle East santur. It has strings stretched over a wooden sound box, and the strings are hit by bamboo beaters. As many Chinese instruments, it came to China through Middle East, and most possibly Persia. Previously, it was an accompaniment instrument. It is only recently that it has become a solo instrument. The repertoire Lily Yuan proposes to us includes old traditional pieces, one dating back more than 1,200 years, all adapted for the yangchin, and some recent works. A gracefully talented musician.

Jorge Alfano, a native of Buenos Aires, Argentina spent most of his life studying many forms of music and searching for the higher purpose in life. This form of music has led Jorge back home. Her glowing vocals celebrate the richness of traditional music by weaving her fresh innovations through these ageless tunes. Sandra Reid's exuberant singing brings us "home", no matter what our roots are. Excellent liner notes by Alexei Kondratiev printed in English and French.

The music that flowed was an amalgum of sounds- Violin and Cello with Bansuri Flute- Sarod and Esraj with Piano and Drums- Electric Guitar and Bass with Tabla – Gryphon Guitar with Trumpet and African Percussion… But throughout was the thread of Krishna Das’ deep emotive voice and the voices of the choir and the hypnotic mantric names spun from the living spirit in the room.

Halcyon Days
Artist : Steve Roach, Stephen Kent &Kenneth Newby
Halcyon Days explores via the extensive, diverse instrumental talents of Roach, Newby and Kent, the essential nature of sound itself: not merely what it is, but what it is created from, and in turn, what it creates. Looking under a forever shifting rhythmic surface, this recording, in a similar manner to Roach's other collaborations, Suspended Memories, Forgotten Gods and Earth Island, reveals the elemental and mystical spaces which swirl endlessly in the fluid textures of the sonic universe. This is music that names and erases itself while simultaneously naming its other. It reverses its body and logic, always searching for the elusive center where things previously thought to be oppositional converge. It conjures images, shapes and states of light and darkness, temporally bringing them to the fore while acknowledging their evolutional transience.

Earth Island
Artist : Suspended Memories
It is easy to grasp the concept that Suspended Memories is one of the greatest e-music trios ever. Each member -- Steve Roach, Jorge Reyes, and Suso Saiz -- had a brilliant solo career before forging ahead as a trio. Earth Island, the group's second CD, explores the concept of this planet as an island in the sea called the galaxy. The composition titles make references to the dawn of man and hide isolation and desolation. The music is deep, inspirational, and distant. Roach, Reyes, and Saiz bring their own spiritualities to the table along with their own sound worlds. When they emerge, they emerge as one. This disc is an amalgamation of three distinct entities that intertwine and interact seamlessly. They do not just bring out the best in each other; they bring the totality of each other. The dark atmospheres are full of ethnic spirituality and cultural richness.

The Asankh Nav mantra in particular has a profound trascendental quality to it, while the Wahe Guru Jio takes you into the depths of meditation and bliss.

Dreams
Artist : Daveed
This album is as soothing as a glass of very good wine and a plate of excellent tapas. The music is soothing, elegant, and intriguing without ever crossing the line into vapid elevator music. While Spanish guitar and Mediterranean influences predominate, Daveed doesn't limit himself to those traditions only and that adds a pleasing element of the unexpected to his compositions. Listening to Daveed makes me exceedingly glad to be blessed with hearing and very sad that there are so many calories in so many of those tapas because I think Daved plus the wine and tapas might even be better than Daveed alone.

Dont Be Sad

Once again the Ars Nova Singers deliver touching and inspiring harmonies, supported by Bill's sensitive piano playing and brillianly melodic arrangements for oboe, bassoon, clarinet and flute. In a career marked by extraordinarily beautiful and poplular music, A Place Called Morning may be his most appealing work yet.

Brink
Artist : Dave Stringer
Dave Stringer: Brink Reviewed By Derk Richardson in Yoga Journal Kirtan singer Dave Stringer makes his debut as a folk-rock singer songwriter with 11 songs that unite his spiritual and secular interests in a surprisingly seamless blend. Following a path parallel to that of Jai Uttal, Stringer moves back and forth between original pop songs performed in English and traditional Sanskrit chants, thus gently obliterating any doubt about these two forms belonging on the same record. Continuity is provided by ingenious arrangements that incorporate a fluid mix of Eastern and Western acoustic and electric instruments – a combination of various guitars (including dobro and Hawaiian steel), dulcimer, piano, accordian, harmonium, tabla, sarangi, cello, violin, flute, trumpet, drums and a plethora of ethnic percussion and backing vocals. An accomplished record producer as well (Axiom of Choice, Suzanne Teng), Stringer has organized the diverse sounds into a sequence of elegant aural rainbows, retaining an Eastern cultural resonance even when fleshing out unabashedly pop melodies.

Dhyana Aman Meditation of No Mind
Artist : Manose
For ages, spiritual seekers have looked East for the key to cutting through material illusion in their search for the divine space we all share, a temple accessed only via the inner travels of the quiet mind. Recorded in Kathmandu, Nepal, Dhyana Aman: Meditation of No Mind evokes the boundless expanse and reverberating stillness of the Himalayas, paving the listener’s path to this elusive, mist-shrouded sanctuary of true realization. Timeless chants beckon from the towering quiet, floating on bamboo dreamscapes and the singing bowls’ eternal ring. Manose’s flute threads through the music like drifting incense vapors, a gentle reminder of a steadily burning ember. Radiant chanting by Tibetan nun Choying Drolma and monk Dorje Lama lend a transcendent, otherworldly feel to a recording that is breathtakingly beautiful in its simplicity. Ideal for relaxation, meditation and bodywork, Dhyana Aman: Meditation of No Mind reveals a new petal in the lotus bloom of Tibetan/Nepali meditation music—a vehicle for introspective journeys imbued with the healing aspects of an age-old tradition. Using only traditional instruments and arrangements, this is a purely acoustic recording. The sounds of these ancient callings create an ideal atmosphere for meditation and bodywork.

Firefly
Artist : Mathew Joseph
"Firefly" is an intricate blend of Western and Eastern musical styles that merges elements as varied as classical guitar, chant rhythms, reggae, swing, blues, jazz, ragas and Indian folk music in a seamless tapestry. An all acoustic album, it combines a string section of acoustic Spanish and steel string guitars, cello, violin and bass, with a percussion ensemble that includes tabla , dumbek, mrdang, kanjeera, hand cymbals, chimes and drums. Brilliant flute, piano and percussion solos and rich vocal harmony embellish this work that includes six songs and two instrumentals. Reminding us of the tragedy we see unfolding in Kaliyug, the age of destruction, it urges peace and harmony and brings a message of hope, evoking the ethereal magic of the high Himalayas, the wisdom of its sages and the jubilation of the golden age to come.

Noor
Artist : Geoffrey Armes
Noor, a concept album chronicling the compelling true story of a pacifist Sufi Indian princess who made a seemingly incongruous choice to become a radio operator spy for the Allies during WWII, was subsequently captured by the Gestapo, tortured, and executed at Dachau. This is a rich, movie-ready tale that has been compartmentalized into seven songs which conjure myriad images of the destiny-determining situations Princess Noor Inayat Khan heroically confronted during her short life. Moreover, the listener is easily drawn into a vicarious position of thinking about how they themselves might respond upon facing the same life-shaping choices and tests of the soul she confronted with great courage and virtue. Noor reveals itself to be rather like a hybrid Arabic, Indian, West-African world music nod to prog – an avant-garde progressive world music if you like labels. These are longer length songs (five of the seven songs range from 7-11 minutes) often parsed together using movements, which helps Armes to flesh out these musical vignettes. They are primarily driven by keyboards that shift through jazz inflected electric piano vamps, textured synth washes, and a wide variety of dialed-up sounds such as xylophone and Egyptian oboe with tempered microtones. Modal acoustic guitar riffing skirts the periphery but jumps to the forefront in the right spaces, and is underpinned by a melodically insistent bass joined by what has become by now, Armes’ hallmark admixture of strongworld percussion this time featuring talking drums, dumbek, ubang and udu.

Celtic Lamentations Healing Music For Twelve Months And A Day
Artist : Áine Minogue
Inspired by the traditional wisdom of giving ourselves “a year and a day” to grieve, Celtic Lamentations offers a “companion in music”—a collection of recordings by Áine Minogue that carries the Celtic tradition of healing through music, and focuses on the return to everyday life. On September 11, 2002, Minogue was trying to decide how to honor the Americans who lost their lives in the Twin Towers the year before. Being an acclaimed international musician, she turned to her beloved music collection to get her through, but soon realized there was nothing that really captured her grief. With Celtic Lamentations, she has created the recording she wanted to hear that day. The eclectic array of tracks includes Celtic keening, the Banshee, Ireland’s classic “Year and a Day,” several original compositions, and “Deus Meus”—an unusual fusion of Latin with Gaelic. Áine Minogue is an artist who has long explored Ireland’s themes and mysteries, and who captures its very essence in her vocal and instrumental melodies. Now listeners join her to experience music’s ability to help us acknowledge and let go of that which we’ve lost—and to remember the joys that lie ahead—with Celtic Lamentations.

He has performed alongside Ravi Shankar and contributed to tracks by Madonna, Duran Duran, and other popular western musicians. The sarangi is a string instrument, held upright and played with a bow. Its ability to imitate the human voice has made it a popular instrument for singing performers. The sarangi is used to great effect in many of the tracks on RARE ELEMENTS, such as Joe Claussell's "Sayaji." Claussell uses a repeated sample of sarangi to punctuate Sultan Khan's vocals, which alters the usual drone of the instrument and gives it a new, modern context. Thievery Corporation delivers the most mellow track, "Tarana," a deep, beat-driven number that Sultan Khan's vocals float over, while ambient melodies punctuate the sparse arrangement. RARE ELEMENTS gives a diverse mix of music, from moody down-tempo to hard dance beats. Most importantly, the album is expertly sequenced so the music flows without any jarring transitions.

Sadhana
Artist : Maneesh de Moor
Stunning in its sensuality and lush with ethereal and earthly rhythms, Sadhana gathers a circle of musicians from around the globe for ten tracks of ethno-ambient chill/world that serve as an "aphrodisiac for the soul." Here, Dutch composer Maneesh de Moor has created an ecstatic blend of Tibetan chanting and didgeridoo, tamboura and acoustic bass, Persian santoor and piano, and the heavenly voices of Sudha and Sandhya Sanjana that will allow listeners to hear their walls dissolve into a joyful awareness of life. A master of keyboard layering, Maneesh has taken his mastery of sound-synthesis and infused it with the sounds of nature—birdsong, flowing water, crickets in a nighttime soundscape—and the human voice—from whispers to deep, baritone chanting—to evoke "Sadhana": a contemporary tribute to the spiritual life of devotion and meditation. On this new musical creation, de Moor ventures off into a sublime and devotional sound all on his own. "This album is not about musicality, but about transformation—this music is made for the energetic, physical, and mental state of well-being in the listener," says de Moor. "The music on this CD came through from the Beyond, guided by Spirit. All I had to do was to be open and receptive to it and record that space, that energy." The result is Sadhana, a journey inspired by the magical rituals of India, Tibet, Yoruba, and Native American and Sufi worlds—and meant to create a space for visions and Oneness.

Music As Medicine

Ancient Tibetan teachings tell us that merely seeing an image of the Medicine Buddha—or even hearing his name—holds the power to heal. Now, acclaimed musician and former Buddhist monk Nawang Khechog invokes the blessings of this potent deity on his new recording, Music As Medicine. Carlos Nakai joins Nawang Khechog as a special guest artist to create a cross-cultural “apothecary” of soothing melodies and healing chants to infuse this universal energy within anyone who listens. Dakini Lounge - Prem Joshua Remixed
Artist : Prem Joshua Remixed (Various)
ere, an eclectic collection of cutting edge mixologists including Karsh Kale, Sean Dinsmore (The Dum Dum Project), Joi and Dharma Dogz (of Waterbone) shed new light on Joshua’s signature sound, translating his East-West alchemies into stunning dub, chill and dance floor masterworks. Prem Joshua has come a long way from the 18-year-old German rocker, mind blown by a Ravi Shankar performance, answering a mysterious call from a faraway place. While spending the better part of 20 years in India (where he has sold well over 50,000 records), Joshua has developed a unique musical style employing sitar, Indian flutes, saxophone, electronica and tarana-style singing that artfully—and skillfully—bridges the gap between traditional Eastern sounds and Western jazz forms, prompting the Times of India to dub him “the new guru of East-West fusion music.”

Etherea Borealis
Artist : Aurah
Another chapter closes ...and opens with Etherea Borealis. We first came to America and stranded as students in Boston. It was a cornucopia of information and at the same time a period of culture shock. We soon understood we had nurtured our left brains enough and that it was time to dive into the actual practice of being musicians rather then studying its technicalities. We packed a still small studio and drove to sunny California. (Heard that one before, right..?) With our first album entitled Judith Martin, we immersed in the path of songwriting we had practiced and learned through years of schooling and formal training. Very soon our approach to music took on a whole new vantage point. The inspiration to record music as an emotional backdrop, a painting of sounds if you will, allowing us as well as the listener to undertake a journey of day dreaming and imagination, was born out of reading the novel The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. We put aside everything we learned about traditional songwriting, about catchy song forms, hooks, 3 min. 30 second time limits... and we created from intuition and heart. Without being fully aware of it at first, it just happened. The music wrote itself. Yes, we still had to put it all together, but it was effortless. Just like the difference between a task you feel you have to perform and something you love to do. Out of this came the CD Songs of the Alchemist. Some songs were electronic yet organic, while some were instrumental and ethnic. Some had vocals but no lyrics. Some were reminiscent of a film-score. Why not take it a step further? Judith took paint, her diaries of recorded dreams and emotions, and started looking for sounds to create an all encompassing, multi-sensory and hypnotic experience. We called it Kismet. Picture and words became as much part of the project as music. How can you separate one art form from the other anyway...; sometimes they just merge together. This brings us to Etherea Borealis where we combine songs with the elements of ethereal soundscapes we had learned to love. Some songs were written over the course of the last years and others are extended cues of the feature film score Loving Annabelle, which we recently composed. The creative process is an interesting and unpredictable one, sometimes one cannot explain what makes something ready and ripe to be released into the world. We feel this music to be a true reflection of who we are today, knowing that tomorrow a new truth will be born again. We hope you will enjoy it, too. - AURAH

Waking The Cobra
Artist : Baird Hersey
Waking the Cobra is an overtone singing Chakra meditation CD recorded by Baird Hersey who later went on to form his Overtone Singing Choir PRANA. The only thing other than reverberation on this recording is the sound of Baird's voice.
The CD opens with a piece called "Atha", a Sanskrit word which means, "May the following have an auspicious beginning and successful end". It is the opening word of Patanjali's Yogasutras.
Next, is the title piece, "Waking the Cobra " which is in fact a collection of seven short pieces. They are meditations on the traditional shape, color, element and sound for each of the chakras. Hersey first recorded a multi-layered vocal background drone or moving harmony. Then, singing two pitches at once, he recorded the high melody parts.
This is followed by an extended piece called "The Conch Shell, The Wheel and the Sword". These words are taken from the invocation chanted before beginning the practice of Ashtanga Yoga. Call and response, rising harmonies, vocal textures, and overtone melodies, are used in this extended piece to investigate the symbolic meaning of the objects.
The CD concludes with "Between Sthira and Sukha. This is a phrase from Patanjali's Yogasutras which means between alert steadiness and relaxed comfort. This piece searches to balance those qualities by alternating low Multiphonic voice overtone singing and high falsetto harmonies.

Gathering in the Light
Artist : Baird Hersey and Prana with Krishna Das

** EDITOR'S NOTE: "Gathering In The Light" is Yoga Instructor Sarah Ivanhoe's CD of the month **

THE CD

"Gathering In The Light" is a pairing of two musical forces. Kirtan master Krishna Das, and Baird Hersey and his overtone singing choir Prana unite here to make music that’s whole is far greater than the sum of its parts. With the open hearted sound he is so well know for, Krishna Das sings seven of his most beloved chants over arrangements created by Baird, and sung by Prana.

But, Prana is far more than a human harmonium. The other worldly ensemble sound of Prana's drones, textures and rising harmonies are a perfect setting for both Baird's high arcing overtone melodies and Krishna Das' rich baritone.

The two featured voices, sometimes support one another, and sometimes act as a foil for one another. When placed in the frame of the 8 voice choir, they shine like two spirits in pursuit of the same ethereal goal.

Although this is neither purely a Prana CD or Krishna Das CD, It is like nothing else you will hear. "Gathering In The Light" is innovative, heartfelt, and breath taking.

THE STORY

In October of 2004 Krishna Das attended a release party for PRANA's first CD, "The Eternal Embrace". After Prana had sung, Krishna Das said to Baird, "Let's make a record together or something".

Over the next two year the "or something" was Krishna Das inviting Prana to sing at his larger benefit Kirtans in the New York area. As a part of those evenings KD would join Prana to sing Baird's arrangement of his chant "Puja". The combination of the ethereal sound of overtone singing supporting the rich, open hearted voice of Krishna Das was stunning.

In 2006 Baird and KD decided to record "Puja" for Prana's new CD. The resulting 12 minute piece was so striking, they resolved to record an entire CD together. The result is "Gathering in the Light", Krishna Das singing seven of his most beloved chants over arrangements created by Baird and sung by Prana.

On four pieces percussion was added: Jerry Marotta, (Peter Gabriel, Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello) on hand percussion and drums, South Indian Masters Drummers Subash Chandran, playing ghatam (clay pot), Ganesh Kumar playing kanjira (tunable tambourine), and Arjun Alan Bruggeman on Tabla. The only instrument on the CD other than percussion is the human voice.

The singers of PRANA are; Peter Buettner, Amy Fradon, Kirsti Gholson, Julie Last, Bruce Milner, Julian Lines, Leslie Ritter, Joe Veillette

"Gathering In The Light" is dedicated to Pattabhi Jois and Neem Karoli Baba.

All Chants Composed by Krishna Das., arranged and produced by Baird Hersey

With Moon on the Water, Richardson offers two musical experiences. On the first CD, listeners enjoy the pure tones of the solo shakuhachi, as it has been played for centuries. The Dream Is Valid - A Benefit Compilation for Kiva Org
Artist : Zaadz Visionary Music
At Zaadz Visionary Music, we are motivated by our belief in the power of music to effect positive change. Music has always been a unequaled organizer of people - over one hundred million dollars is spent on music every day in the United States. That's an enormous pool of resources and attention that could be harnessed to make the world a better place while still enjoying ourselves. When musicians give their creative gifts in support of loving effort, and audiences exercise their purchasing power to support that effort, all of us get to help and have fun at the same time - to "put play to work."

Our first group project is this benefit compilation for Kiva.org - an organization that arranges microloans for entrepreneurs in developing nations. Everyone involved, including our kind hosts at Omstream, has relinquished their profit from the sales of this album so it can go directly to empowering sustainable business practices in local economies all over the planet. Not just once, but over and over - as our microloans are repaid and album sales continue, this compilation will be the center of an ever-expanding wave of global support.

The Dream Is Valid is a reminder to not just rest in peace, but to act from it - because even if this life is an illusion, it's the only one we have. And now, The Dream Is Valid for many more of the hardworking people in the developing world, who have a new ally in their struggle against the tide of globalism.

But as much as this is a project for the greater good, it is proof that socially-conscious music can sound awesome, too. It's been an honor to work with the diversity of incredible talent represented on this collection - visionary musicians, every one of them. Enjoy the tunes, and rest easy knowing that your entertainment money is making a difference.

This is the essence which is reflected and transmitted through their music. Through the sacred practice of kirtan, repetitiously chanting the names of God/Goddess from ancient India, they guide you on a musical mediation and yogic adventure deep into the essence of Bhakti- the yoga of the Heart, the yoga of Love! World Festival Of Sacred Music - Los Angeles 2002
Artist : The World Festival of Sacred Music
The first Festival was initiated by His Holiness the Dalai Lama in 1999 to mark the millennium with a message of peace, cultural understanding, and spirituality: the goal was to present the Festival on four continents. Building on the success of the “Americas” Festival, the LA organizing partners - UCLA Center for Intercultural Performance, Foundation for World Arts and EarthWays Foundation - committed to the creation of a new Festival in 2002 and every three years thereafter. In 1999, 2002 & 2005 this community oriented, citywide Festival had a combined estimated attendance of 120,000 people and featured 4,000 artists in 185 venues all across Los Angeles.

World Festival Of Sacred Music - the Americas
Artist : The World Festival of Sacred Music
The World Festival of Sacred Music (WFSM) - The Americas was a series of 80 events over a nine-day period in October 1999. The Festival idea was initiated by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, who sought to enter the new Millennium in a worldwide celebration of peace. As a result of an outpouring of interest and enthusiasm from the public, the artists and the community partners alike, the organizers - UCLA Center for Intercultural Performance, Earthways Foundation and the Foundation for World Arts - committed to the creation of a Festival in 2002 and every three years thereafter. In September 2002, 2,000 artists performed in 42 sites across the city to an estimated audience of 30,000 people over a 16-day period. This double CD set features a wide range of artists, from Balinese Gamelan to Native American Flute, and illustrates the heart of the festival as expressed by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama: "There is something in music that transcends and unites. This is evident in the sacred music of every community - music that expresses the universal yearning that is shared by people all over the globe."

Gypsy Road
Artist : Peter Sterling
Gypsy road is a cross cultural global journey through the rich and diverse musical heritage of the world. Latin, Asian, gypsy, folk and Caribbean influences are woven together with contemporary instrumental sounds for an exotic sonic tapestry that brings to life the magic and mystery of far off distant lands. A journey to remember! Recorded at the foot of the Sange'de Christo Mountains in Santa Fe', New Mexico.

Breathing Rhythms
Artist : Glen Velez
Glen Velez highlights drums and other percussion on this album, addressing them as a way to reflect the human body, and, specifically, the breath. There is certainly is a world fusion element to the generous mix of tribal drums, Eastern woodwinds, and Western instruments, but Velez's unusual compositional style, unique use of incidental vocals, and guttural male chants makes this effort pleasantly difficult to classify. The overall effect of this percussion-based album is meant to stimulate the body's healing center, and induce a state of comfort while promoting proper breathing.

Cafe Santa Fe
Artist : DJ Free
In some cases, there is a disparity between the way an artist perceives his/her recording and how the listener perceives it. That isn't to say that the recording is necessarily a disappointment -- it could simply be a case of the recording having one appealing flavor instead of another. And Cafe Santa Fe is a good example. In the liner notes, this instrumental collaboration between Soulfood's DJ Free and Ra Music's Ron Cohen is described as a combination of chillout/downtempo electronica and the flavor of the Southwestern desert. Well, the chillout/downtempo part is accurate, but the Latin flavor that prevails is generally often more Spain than New Mexico or Arizona. When one thinks of Latin music in the American Southwest, one thinks of regional Mexican music -- the Mexican culture is as strong in Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, and California as the Cuban culture is in Miami -- and Cafe Santa Fe, for the most part, really feels more like a journey from Madrid to Valencia (by way of North Africa) than a journey from El Paso to Santa Fe to Tucson. Cafe Santa Fe is really a place where electronica's chillout/downtempo aesthetic meets nuevo flamenco more than a place where electronica's chillout/downtempo aesthetic meets norteño, tejano, ranchera, duranguense, or mariachi (which isn't to say that regional Mexican music doesn't have Spanish influences -- it has plenty of them, certainly). "Kiva," with its Native American vibe, is arguably the disc's most Southwest-sounding track. But regardless of whether one thinks of Cafe Santa Fe as more Spain or more Southwestern U.S., this laid-back CD is a thoughtful example of electronica and world music coming together. The performances have both charm and character, making Cafe Santa Fe one of the more noteworthy chillout/downtempo releases of early 2006.

In Between The Heartbeat
Artist : Yuval Ron
An unusual pairing of saxophone and didgeridoo provides the building materials for Dij wall; the air fills with oscillating growls and smooth sax meanderings, embellished with tinkling ceramics. A rythmic, machine-like accompaniment leads to the semi-solemn, though quite lovely Cantus non verbus, which is based on a Gregorian chant, and performed by a string quartet. Similar, though less structured musically, Zerox meditation is another blend of music and machine; gentle electronic strings rise and fall behind mechanical humming and clunking in, with a bit of entropy toward the track's end. A sudden, surprising slash of strings opens Dark spirited forest angel. Sparse interjections of violins, cello and viola are menacing, and cricket-y background sounds definitely add that woodland feel, so the title certainly seems apt. Heart circles swelters quietly... a string-like synth chord rises from behind, and the hazy shimmer of a distorted flute dances in front, though never fully becoming "visible". Muted clanks and other sounds add further texture. Instrumentally, the pulsating drone which evolves during Propeller etude features the sounds of "rubber roar" and the "plastic rainmaker". Reminiscent, but not exactly a replication of a stormy nocturnal airplane flight, the track should appeal to fans of drone and pulse. From within a murky haze, strange fragments of sound randomly emerge... in Night time, one hears fluttering electronic soundshifts, warbling woodwinds, clattering windchimes, all of which combine to a spookily, disorienting effect. The strings of the New Hampshire Philharmony make an appearance in Seed dream, playing second fiddle to a rapid clatter and an echoey metallic clank. Mostly subdued, the track is set upon early on by a relatively fierce outburst, then continues with the peaceful coexistence of its elements.

Divas & Devas
Artist : Dave Stringer
Divas & Devas is a CD of East Indian bhajans, sung as male-female duets, in Sanskrit, Hindi and Marathi. The overall feeling is romantic, with the intimate interplay of masculine and feminine gesturing toward the larger relationship of the human and the divine. The arrangements also echo this duality, employing traditional Indian instruments such as tablas, sarangi and santoor, along with Western instruments such as vibes, cello, trumpet, flute, mandolin and lap steel.
The English word diva conveys a number of shades of meaning, some complimentary and some pejorative, ranging from accomplished artist through demanding ego. The origin of the term, however, is the Sanskrit word deva, which means luminous, shining, god, or heavenly one. And it is toward this original meaning that much artistic expression ultimately points. For me then, the title of this CD, ‘Divas and Devas’, refers to the relationship of our limited sense of self to the expansive awareness that we call divine love, as one reaches toward the other.

Gravity and Grace
Artist : Stuart Balcomb
Yoga Master Peter Sterios writes: "From the beginning of this project, it was clear to me that those involved in putting together my first yoga DVD all shared one vision: to create from a space of inspiration. From the outset, the cinematography, choreography, editing, authoring, and finally with the composing of original music which you will find on this CD, every aspect reflected that commitment made by all the artists. Stuart Balcomb's music is the icing on an already amazing cake that brought all the pieces together seamlessly. This music is perfect for creating the 'acoustic space' for yoga, for massage, for meditation, and for any activity where music and sound can invoke the power to transform." Balcomb writes: "This is a new kind of yoga soundtrack. I took an approach entirely different from what has traditionally been done. After seeing the elegant footage, I knew I needed to 'sculpt' the music to enhance the movements instead of simply writing tunes that would merely function as background music. Peter and I spent two days meticulously spotting the footage to determine different changes in energy levels and movements for almost every frame of film. This is something normally done for a feature-length film, not yoga videos. It then took 5-1/2 weeks of solid composing, recording, and mixing to create three hours of music for the DVD." Produced by Conscious Enlightenment and Transcendent Sound, the Gravity & Grace soundtrack, containing over two-and-a-half hours of music.

Ganga Dance
Artist : Yotam Haimovitch
GangaDance is classical Indian ragas translated into electronic tones and tempos by means of the syntar - an original musical instrument combining a special crafted sitar and a synthesizer. This instrument enables Yotam to convert the deeply philosophical foundation and technical elements of the Classical Indian Music to the more familiar MIDI format, thus enables the Western listener to experience the full range of deliberate emotions that Classical Indian music traditionally hopes to arouse among its listeners.

Born in 1973, Yotam spent most of his adult years in Banarass India learning sitar and Classic Indian Music from Pandit Shivanath Mishra, one of the world's greatest sitar artists and head of the Musical Department at the Sanskrit University of Banarass. Educated in both modern Western music and classical Indian music and philosophy, Yotam's music reflects the combination of the two. Using the syntar - and accompanied by an ensemble of musicians of various backgrounds, Yotam plays the classical Indian Ragas he had mastered in synthesized electronic tones and produces a new and exciting kind of music that sweeps the listener into both physical and spiritual reality special to each of the segments in this album.

Yoga Rhythm
Artist : Brent Lewis
60 minutes of Yoga/Movement music with rhythmic percussion, warm synthesizer, exotic flutes, mystical sitar, grand piano and mantras. Yoga instructor favorite, guidance was provided by Kripalu and certified yoga and movement instructors.

Yoga Dream
Artist : DJ Free
Yoga Dream was created while DJ Free was co-teaching a program called “Finding Your Vision” at Esalen Institute. Throughout the month-long process, which focused on how music, consciousness and mediation interact with the dream state, as well as in the months that followed, DJ Free consulted and worked with Swami Shivalingam Saraswati, Yogacharya and several yoga instructors to create an ideal musical complement to yoga, massage and meditation. On Yoga Dream, grand pianist Peter Schimke and percussionist Brent Lewis add to Free’s keyboards, soundscapes and native flute. More generous than most New Age faire, each CD offers (refers to Celestial Meditations also) at least 60 minutes of laid-back musings. This is great stuff, ideal for floating away.
