Sufi Splendor
Artist : Manish Vyas
The dervish’s whirling is a meditation—communion and contemplation—set to music; the calm center of a spiritual cyclone. Sufi Splendor: Music for Whirling Meditation captures the music that drives this resplendent and timeless practice. Serpentine ney (flute), melodic santoor, impassioned singing and ancient frame drum form a hypnotic rhythmic engine, building in intensity and carrying the listener to whirling ecstasy. Recorded in India’s Ishvani Kendra monastery, Sufi Splendor: Music for Whirling Meditation features seasoned musicians, masters of the sema’a (Sufi ceremony), performing this irresistible music that propelled the original trance dancers. The Persian mystic poet Rumi, founder of the Mevlana Dervish brotherhood, wrote, “…Music uplifts the soul to realms above. The ashes glow, the latent fires increase. We listen and are fed with joy and peace.” Immensely enjoyable for straight listening, truly indispensable for inner exploration, Sufi Splendor: Music for Whirling Meditation places the listener at the tranquil heart of that latent fire.

The Essence
Artist : Deva Premal
This top selling New Age/World beat CD is smooth, silky, calming and peaceful. Featuring Deva Premal's transcendant voice, ambient grooves, keyboard and hand percussion, THE ESSENCE invokes the heart healing power of ancient chants and mantras. The Gayatri Mantra, the oldest known to mankind, is the centerpiece of this truly meditative CD. Ideal for yoga, healing work, meditation and dancing.

This Dewdrop World
Artist : Suvarna
After the success of her first two recordings—the upbeat Fire of the Oracle and rhythmic Energia (by Infinity)—vocalist/violinist Suvarna takes her raga-based vocal improvisations into a more laid back, intimate space on This Dewdrop World. Her latest effort plays like an aural massage: the songs unfold naturally, drawing the listener into a relaxed world of lush sonic textures and mantric ambience far removed from the frenetic pace of daily life. This Dewdrop World features a world of instruments including kora, violin, saz, oud, mandolin and tabla, all expertly orchestrated by producer Martyn Phillips (Was Not Was, Soul II Soul, Khaled) to complement Suvarna’s gracefully confident voice. Dedicated to “all who are striving for awakening,” This Dewdrop World is sublime accompaniment for introspective journeys and a delicate musical acknowledgment of life’s beauty.

Yatri
Artist : Prem Joshua
In the vast scope of his musical expression, Prem Joshua, himself a Yatri (traveller) beyond musical traditions, creates an inspired collection of songs that reflect a deep love affair with India. People down the ages have heard a calling to sacred places within and without. In the East this journey is called Yatra (pilgrimage). If you feel this call — let this album be your travel companion.

Spirit Dwelling
Artist : Geoffrey Armes
Spirit Dwelling, sonic architecture for the heart, mind and soul, is a gallery of deconstructed groove soundscapes that mix world percussion (udus, talking drums, rainsticks and the like), with treated guitars (lots of pitch-transposed parallel 4ths through delays, etc.) that bend lengthy modal melodies around drones and the occasionally very pure acoustic note. A holding place that invites contemplation or even 'no mind' peace, yet at the same time energizes and inspires movement and effort. A sonic space to work both with and with-in. Yoga, a traditional practice of exercise for the body, aims to enable a freedom of spirit and soul from the body's demands. Hence, a music designed to accompany such practice should both inspire the coarse body energy required to complete the poses and so forth, and bring light to the hidden recesses of the spirit, acting as a holding place for a feeling of inner contemplation and peace. Composer Geoffrey Armes, after some twenty-five years working with Modern Dance in New York City, Asia and Europe, combined with practice of the spiritual exercise of the Subud latihan, is uniquely positioned to create such music. With Spirit Dwelling, a beautifully crafted but deeply felt opus, he more than achieves this aim, with a lyrical sonority that sparkles and dances over an inexorable flow of well-wrought, deeply touching music. Put together by the same creativity that forged the acoustic journeys of Elemental Red, the modern dance. Place your mind aside and this music will take your soul into Spirit Dwelling.

Meditations on the Gita
Artist : Ram Dass
Personnel include: Ram Dass (spoken vocals); John McDowell (various instruments). Ram Dass came to prominence in the 1950s and '60s as Dr. Richard Alpert (one of Dr. Timothy Leary's cohorts in the early experiments with LSD), and has continued a path of personal exploration and spiritual practice ever since. MEDITATIONS ON THE GITA combines readings by Ram Dass from the Bhagavad-Gita with musical accompaniment from a variety of guests. These include keyboardists John McDowell, bansuri player Steve Gorn, and vocalists Diana Rogers and Shyamdas, who join Dass in extended chants. The music is peaceful, soothing, and highlights the pearls of wisdom Das dispenses from the Gita, creating an overall experience conducive to meditation and self-realization.

Planet Yoga - Music for Yoga, Meditation and Peace
Artist : TriLoka - (Various Artists)
This two-disc set is divided according to its usefulness to the listener. Disc one is the choice for the yoga part and is perhaps a slightly active version of peace. The booklet even shows a number of hatha yoga poses to try while singing along to a selection of chants that invoke various divinities by repeating their names over and again. Jai Uttal sings to the young cowherd deity Lord Krishna on his fusion-laced "Gopala" and Bhagavan Das praises Ram with a melodic groove, while Dave Stringer offers a quiet prayer to Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed boy who removes obstacles. Both tracks from Krishna Das honor Lord Shiva, one being a previously unreleased, rhythm-based "prayer" to his fierce Rudra incarnation. Two lesser-known artists also make fine contributions -- Wah! and Diana Rogers, both of whom have sung as part of the Krishna Das Kirtan Posse over the years. So you've got all that energy out and now you are ready to meditate or be passively peaceful? Pop in disc two and chill on out. The aural landscape painted by Drala is a bit on the new age side, but calming nonetheless. Benjy Wertheimer and his esraj (a classical Indian string instrument) lay down two pieces based on the alap (a classical Indian musical statement), though the specific ragas are not named. The disc closes with the legendary "Emperor of Melody," Ali Akbar Khan. A master of the sarod who has been performing since 1936, Khan offers "Morning Meditatio," which originally appeared on his 1990 release Journey.

One Track Heart
Artist : Krishna Das
Hardcore followers of Indian religious philosophy may find much to recommended in these modernizations of traditional Bhakti Yoga chants. But the yogi rock created by Das along with Jai Uttal and Jim Wilson may strike nonbelievers as too guileless to survive the electrification process. Ethnic Indian experimentation with external forms are one thing, since they usually redistribute the weight of sufficient cultural baggage to yield interesting results. But this disc begins with a feeling of secondhandedness and from there borrows yet again, leaving the listener decidedly shortchanged.

Pilgrim Heart
Artist : Krishna Das
It's hard to say whether hindsight is an effective tool or not when it comes to music. To look with a critical eye back over the span of an artist's career may not be exactly fair, but it seems quite useful to a listener trying to make a selection of, say, a greatest-hits collection versus individual releases. The work of Krishna Das is a great example. If you examine his albums closely, you will begin to notice a few trends in the track listings. More than once has he done "Hanuman Chaleesa," "Devi Puja," and "Hara Hara Mahadeva," though the former makes nary an appearance on this particular record. However, Sting does. He chirps his way through "Mountain Hare Krishna" with that ever-entrancing Sting voice of his. Of course, the song "Mountain Hare Krishna" was reincarnated on Das' Live on Earth release in 1999. What to do? If you're a hardcore kirtan lover, then you'll want this on your shelf. If you're only looking for a Das sampler, you'd do better to pick up his Live on Earth. That way you throw a wider net capturing his work, and as a bonus you get to avoid the very odd, slightly disconcerting, calypso-style "The Ring Song."

Door of Faith
Artist : Krishna Das
Krishna Das continues his spiritual albums, mixing Indian inflections with a Western base (which comes in the way the songs are constructed, often owing a lot to folk music). Produced by Rick Rubin, this has a wonderful, full sound with some excellent touches, like the emotional cello on "Sita's Prayer." It's a very slow album -- the pieces blooming gradually like flowers -- intended to give its pleasure over time rather than in a single play. While this is obviously a commercial venture, it's also a labor of love and devotion. And make no mistake, it is a truly lovely disc, accessible in its structures (in fact, "Shri Hanuman Chaleesa" would be a rock song if it had a drum kit) and its style, thanks in part to Rubin and his experience. This would be excellent as a meditation aid, but it also transcends that to become a fascinating listening experience throughout. Das sounds like Tom Waits without the voice cracks, which is no bad thing -- his voice is somewhat hypnotic, as befits the music he's making. The underlying sample (a processed voice?) on the last track adds texture to what's really a country song in disguise, altering it completely. A record that's an experience in every possible way.

Greatest Hits Of The Kali Yuga
Artist : Krishna Das
GREATEST HITS OF THE KALI YUGA collects the highlights from five of spiritual leader/singer Krishna Das's albums (plus one new track and a remix). A disciple of devotional yoga and kirtan (chanting the names of God), Krishna Das creates a remarkably effective combination of traditional Indian chanting and Western pop structures and melodies. Harmonium and tabla blend with guitar, bass, violin, and auxiliary percussion in ways that bridge East and West, giving rise to a stirring spiritual music that is both catchy and meditative. GREATEST HITS also includes a full-length DVD, a documentary on Krishna Das entitled ONE LIFE AT A TIME. In addition to illustrating Das's dedication to bringing the wisdom of Eastern spirituality to the ears of Western music fans (the DVD includes some fine concert footage), the documentary also charts Das's long path of discovery, including his experiences in India and his enduring friendship with Ram Dass (a.k.a. Dr. Richard Alpert). It is a fascinating document, and complements the music nicely, making this a highly worthwhile package.

Live On Earth
Artist : Krishna Das
Considered the leading Western proponent of kirtan chanting, Krishna Das shows his stuff on the double-disc Live on Earth. The live setting is where Das really shines, with posse in tow generally singing in the traditional call-and-response fashion. Devotion flows through his husky baritone voice and enthusiasm abounds in the claps of the group. This is how these mantras are meant to be sung, their blessings showering down on every chanter. The explosive "Radhe Shyam" and "Samadhi Sita Ram" open the session with a bang while praising the glory of Govinda and Ram along with their consorts, Radha and Sita. Then, a hush falls and stillness overwhelms when Das and bansuri flutist Steve Gorn offer themselves at the feet of the guru with "Shri Guru Charanam." Going on like this, balancing the ecstatic and the solemn while holding the sacred, Das makes his offerings to all of the major Hindu deities -- Krishna, Hanuman, Kali, Lakshmi, Rama, and Shiva. Particularly enchanting is the ancient hymn "Hanuman Chaleesa." Das sings it to please his own guru, though it was composed in honor of the monkey god Hanuman, noble hero of the great Indian epic Ramayana. One of the most well-known nama sankirtanas in the West repeats the names of Hare Rama Hare Krishna. Das includes two different renditions, "Three Rivers Hare Krishna" and "Mountain Hare Krishna," perhaps signifying his own fondness for the simple beauty of this chant. For the most part, Das sticks with the tried and true Indian instrumentation of harmonium and percussion to create his sound, though he does add a bit of keyboard, cello, and bass to smooth out the edges and truly make it his own. That's fair, and the result is splendid.

Breath Of The Heart
Artist : Krishna Das
According to ancient Indian scriptures and saints, the traditional practice of chanting God's name -- be it Krishna, Rama, Ganesh, or another of the numerous deities -- is a tried and true path leading to union with the divine. Kirtan is one of the main forms of this practice, wherein a leader sings out the call and a group echoes with a response. Breath of the Heart is a live recording of Krishna Das in such a setting. Of course, being a westerner, he rounds out the sound with a little more than the customary harmonium and drum of the "motherland," adding Rob McDonald's solid electric bass, Lili Haydn's exquisite though underused violin, and Steve Gorn's mystical bansuri flute, along with various percussion and such. A single kirtan can go on for as long as the leader feels appropriate, although here Krishna Das limits the pieces to not more than 15 minutes or so. That's just enough to get you going before he moves on to the next, which is good for newcomers but perhaps frustrating for true practitioners. For the result is a quick build that doesn't allow you to so much linger in the melody, but rather pulls you along with the rhythm. It's a forgivable consequence when taking his audience into consideration. Nevertheless, with Rick Rubin at the production helm and topnotch musicianship supporting Das' instantly recognizable voice, the combination is a truly enjoyable, and possibly enlightening, offering.

Shamans Eye Healing Rhythms for Trance Meditation
Artist : Liquid Bloom
Throughout human history and across most native traditions, constant repetitive rhythms and the steady drone of chanting have carried shamans and other spiritual seekers into other dimensions in ecstatic trance. Even today, this music, as ancient as the rocks and wind, provides sacred transport to higher states of wellbeing and bliss. Attaining the Shante Ishta is the goal of this journey. This is the “single eye of the heart," the third eye or wisdom eye of the ancients--the shaman's eye. It is the place where the individual soul attunes to the collective, universal heartbeat that unites us all. Scientific research shows that these primoridial rhythmic sound vibrations do have a direct effect on brain activity. Steady beats at 4-7 cycles per second generate theta brain wave states associated with ecstatic trance. In the theta state, beta (or waking) mind activity is lowered, inducing heightened awareness. We become “spirit sensitive”: receptive, intuitive, present and centered in our heart's intelligence. The trance state can be likened to a waking dream. Inner visions may reveal themselves. Self-realizations and deep insights may surface. Or we may simply feel a renewed lightness of spirit, clarity and joy. Shaman's Eye brims with multi-layered currents of sound and chanting woven around a steady stream of theta rhythms. These provocative rhythms are designed to tap into our own ancestral depths and call us into the secret worlds of trance. Each of these musical landscapes is alive with its own distinctive spirit energy. As they carry us forward they become the vehicle for our journeys.

What is the sound of the moon on the water? It is the music of utter stillness and complete spaciousness—the perfect reflection of self within the universe, and the universe within the self. There is no finer instrument for capturing this music of Zen than the shakuhachi bamboo flute, the instrument which Stan Richardson has dedicated his life to master. With Moon on the Water, Richardson offers two musical experiences. On the first CD, listeners enjoy the pure tones of the solo shakuhachi, as it has been played for centuries. For the second CD, Stan Richardson combines natural sounds recorded during his travels across the Japanese countryside—the rushing of water, the wind over waves, the singing of cranes—with the beauty of the bamboo flute.

Cinema Of Dreams
Artist : Hans Christian
"Cinema Of Dreams is a collection of solo pieces that I composed and recorded over the last three years. Finding new musical settings for the cello has always been of interest to me, and on this CD I have stretched out in this regard more than ever. Some pieces have an electronic quality with oscillator-driven drone scapes, while others incorporate a distinctly classical orchestral sound. Then again, I also love including Rock and World Music elements, especially in the rhythmic structure. Imagine Film Noir to Electronica, with a detour to India and the Middle East... So, there you have it- an esoteric blend of cello, combined with a bunch of other instruments that I play (sarangi, nyckelharpa, sitara, bass, sarod, various rhythm instruments, keyboards, etc) and sound design (tape effects, backwards phrasing, half speed loops, etc). Enjoy the journey!!"

The music evokes Americana sensibilities woven together with traditional Indian instruments, creating a warmth of sound that is inviting and entrancing. Producer Hans Christian expertly fused the sounds of harmonium, bass, cello, sarod, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, keyboards, dumbek, tablas, djun djun drum and frame drum. Gurunam has harnessed the musical devotion that has built in his music over the last 15 years. You will hear flavors of Krishna Das and James Taylor in the deep, smooth textures of Gurunam's voice. His compositions were written in the framework of his yogic lifestyle and are ideal to chant along with. Each track has a unique flavor, and yet they seamlessly flow from one to another to create an album that is great for yoga or meditation. This album also makes you want to jump in your car, turn up the volume, and find a long country road to drive peacefully down. On the track Dukh Par Har, you will hear an amazing call and response between Yogi Bhajan and Gurunam. Yogi Bhajan's chant was taken from a lecture he gave to his students and his voice was mixed in with this composition to stunning effect.

Gravity and Grace
Artist : Stuart Balcomb
Yoga Master Peter Sterios writes: "From the beginning of this project, it was clear to me that those involved in putting together my first yoga DVD all shared one vision: to create from a space of inspiration. From the outset, the cinematography, choreography, editing, authoring, and finally with the composing of original music which you will find on this CD, every aspect reflected that commitment made by all the artists. Stuart Balcomb's music is the icing on an already amazing cake that brought all the pieces together seamlessly. This music is perfect for creating the 'acoustic space' for yoga, for massage, for meditation, and for any activity where music and sound can invoke the power to transform." Balcomb writes: "This is a new kind of yoga soundtrack. I took an approach entirely different from what has traditionally been done. After seeing the elegant footage, I knew I needed to 'sculpt' the music to enhance the movements instead of simply writing tunes that would merely function as background music. Peter and I spent two days meticulously spotting the footage to determine different changes in energy levels and movements for almost every frame of film. This is something normally done for a feature-length film, not yoga videos. It then took 5-1/2 weeks of solid composing, recording, and mixing to create three hours of music for the DVD." Produced by Conscious Enlightenment and Transcendent Sound, the Gravity & Grace soundtrack, containing over two-and-a-half hours of music.

Savasanas
Artist : Gabriele Morgan
"Savasanas I - IV" is the first entry in a new series of works called "Inner Time Music". Inner Time Music allows the listener to drift into deep inner realms and disconnect from the temporal commandments of our usual physical focus which insists that we keep up with the pace dictated by the clocks, cell phones, computers, radios and other devices which structure our days; instead, it invites us to recharge our beings in the spacious timeless dimensions within in which we each have our source, by creating an environment of magnetic, potent but gentle musical beauty that focuses attention while calming the nervous system.
The concept was born when master yoga teacher Annie Carpenter commissioned Gabriele to create music to accompany the final, deep relaxation section (the yoga posture or "asana" known as "Corpse Pose" or, in Sanskrit, "Savasana") of class on a DVD for participants in a UCLA School of Medicine pilot study designed and taught by Annie (“Yoga For Women With Hyperkyphosis”.)The only guidelines given for the music were that there must be no pulse in the compositions, that they had to be two minutes long, and that several were needed for different sequences.
These original short pieces found their way into the hands of another well known and respected Los Angeles yoga teacher, Vinnie Marino (both Vinnie and Annie teach at Yoga Works in Santa Monica). Vinnie found the pieces totally captivating but too short to allow for a prolonged period of exploration of this most potentially rejuvenating asana, and he suggested they be expanded to 10 minutes each and that 4 of them comprise a CD he could use in his class and in his personal practice. This CD is the result of that suggestion.
Although they do not contain anything marking time, these works are not formless. They each have central themes which are stated and evolve and reprise as each track develops, so they are not purely ambient in that respect. Three of the four tracks employ voice as a component but there are no words. They feature familiar western instruments: acoustic and electric guitar, piano, synthesizer, and Gabriele's emotional, mood-setting vocal textures. They are recommended for any activities where relaxation and letting go are primary goals and are extremely effective in inducing a restorative, reflective space in which to inhabit the moment.

Tibetan Chants for World Peace
Artist : The Gyuto Monks Tantric Choir
The Tibetan Buddhist chants on this album had never been recorded until 2001, when Grateful Dead's Mickey Hart brought The Gyuto Monks Tantric Choir to his California studio to record the incredible multiphonics of their sacred rituals. The monks gave Hart permission to overdub their voices, achieving the huge sound of the 100-voice choir as one might hear at their mountain monastery – with each monk's voice singing a complete, extraordinary chord.

Gyuto Tantric University preserves one of Tibetan Buddhism's most esoteric traditions, training many young Tibetan monks in the spiritual legacy of the Gyuto order. The world's eyes are on Tibet as never before – and these prayers for healing, compassion and peace have never been more timely or more relevant.
